I am very envious of all you Fowl Festers. Like the pictures. I very much wanted to go but with weather like we had today there was just too much that I could get done outside and I really should be downsizing for winter not getting more!

I picked apples for storing - hopefully not a waste of time and picked up apples for cider. Then I started putting paneling on the inside of my big coop. After working for half an hour my husband came and helped me, so most of it is done now. Then I set 27 button quail eggs this afternoon. 30 came in the mail but 3 were dented. Now my eyes are glued to the thermometer, I'm always nervous when the incubator is on! Tonight one of my guineas wouldn't come in. So out to the field I went, found her - with 34 eggs under her. She wouldn't move so I carried her back to the coop. I hadn't been finding eggs the last week but thought they were done for the summer so I didn't go looking. Now I have lot's of eggs I can't safely sell so I guess I need to do some baking.

It does seem that I am fighting a losing battle with the fowl mites. I am not finding them on the birds but they seem to be everywhere in the coop. I have also seen a couple bugs that look a lot like fleas but are flying. Can chickens get fleas? And if so where do you find them on the chickens. I'm not finding any bugs of any kind on the chickens right now. I did dust a few last week but they look good now. They are molting so it's easy to check.

We have a family picnic tomorrow, trying to soak up some more of the beautiful weather. I wish we could have another month of this!

what do you do with the button quail? eat them?

I am debating creating a small meat bird coop for my DH (I am a vegetarian) but I am not sure he would eat anything we raise. Our sad little lone turkey poult has grown on him and he asked me today if we could keep him as a pet

He's had a rough start on life, all his little friends died and my DH has now grown attached to him since I've been able to keep him alive. However he's got one bum eye so we've named him Jack...One-Eyed Jack.

So I am in the market for a sad little turkey poult keep our pitiful turkey company. :: sigh :: Please PM me if you have any that would fit the bill.

Babigyrl22- There is a guy in Muskegon that has some poults. I think his ad was on CL in the farm and garden section today. I have gotten a few baby chicks from him. He has a pretty big set up and a lot of birds, but his operation seems really clean. It's not that bad of a drive from where you're at, as I'm right next door in Cascade. Hope this helps.

I saw those "flamingo silkies" and laughed. I wonder if the seller got his $50 a piece for them. I too enjoyed the fowlfest but was able to go home without any:) I was looking for ISAs, but should have known that I wouldn't have found any hybrids at a show. Lots of gorgeous birds though. I loved the indie green ducks. If I didnt' have to worry about them getting into my koi pond and making a buffet out them, I would have taken a couple of them home.

My husband and I saw some a while back at a farm and he wanted to get some. He thought the eggs would be fun to have around for special occasions. I read about them and talked to a few people because even if they are his birds it will be me taking care of them!

I have notice bugs on my playhouse coop. They were there when I got the playhouse brand new at Lowe's. I painted the exterior with oil paint and treated the interior with sevin but now they are back. I don't think they are on the birds, they seem to prefer to be on the wood. And since they are not hiding during the day I dont think they are mites. Tiny things in different sizes that are gray in color.
I also have small black things flying but they are not fleas. Probably small flies or gnates. Nothing like a pile of horse manure with a swarm of newly hatched baby flies around it

. I used fly predators this year and it made a huge difference in the fly population in the barn. Now if only I can train the geese to poop in the back of the yard instead of on my deck.
