Hi all of you fellow Michiganders! My family(hubby, dtr in college & 20 year old special needs son) live in Mason on 10 acres just south of the MSU campus. We have a small flock of egg laying chickens(a couple of Buff orpingtons, a couple RIRs, a couple of White Brahma hens & a rooster(an oops), a standard black Cochin, a couple of the Easter egg laying hens(Americaunas?). plus we have a couple of white dwarf silkie hens & a black dwarf cochin hen who are too old to lay anymore. They are just so darned cute! We also have a couple of Missouri Foxtrotter horses, and the usual pair of barn cats, an indoor ex-barn cat and sheperd/collie? mix female dog. I lost my job last summer after over 20 years in the health care field(laboratory) so I threw myself into maintaining and harvesting our garden. I taught our daughter to can & freeze. She loved it & wants to help me enlarge our garden and help set up a farm stand to sell our excess. Already people are purchasing eggs from us so that helps defray the feed costs. We compost our horse & chicken manure for garden use(raised beds) and spread it on our fields to improve our hay crop. Fortunately I raise our hay so we can keep costs down feeding the geldings. We are involved in 4H(recycling,horse,swine,poultry) and really enjoy that.
So where is the MI Chickenstock going to be in 2009? Marilyn
