I read somewhere on BYC that a different bedding than pine shavings is used in some peoples brooders because it has less dust. I think it is something horse owners use? Like a pellet? Horse owners out there...what is the name of what I'm trying to recall?? Oh the mind...it sure does slip after 60...

There are a number of different brands. TSC usually has one or another. They're just wood pellets. They do work well though and are very absorbent.

Obviously, the warning to stop the fighting was not heeded. The thread will be reopened after it is cleaned up.

Yes smart. My ISA learn how to escape the back yard going under a stool I had the fence propped against. She came back and called all her sisters and they all followed her single file thru the fence. Except the rooster who stood there and watch all 30 go thru the hole and still couldnt figure it out. They were always with me in the garden helping me till up wormies. I miss them alot, esp my Splash and Chickflicks Sweetpea. RIP purty girls.

We've had particularly intelligent ISAs, too. The story I told here recently about the hen that would help my husband on projects around the property and even learned to "hand him" screws when he was building something was an ISA.

Oh, thats too cute. Hand him screws? I wish my little RIR would have grabbed a paint brush and helped me the other day instead of getting it all over herself? She was just being curious.

Yep! It was the neatest thing. She was watching him work. He'd take a screw, use it, take another. She watched for a while and then all of the sudden picked up a screw out of the box and sat it down next to him. He used it. She got another screw out of the box and sat it next to him. On and on until he was finished. Funniest thing.

I have the first pot of stew of the season on the stove simmering for dinner but it looks like it's not going to be done before I have to leave for my dance class. I hope these vultures I lovingly know as my DH and DKs save me some.

Oh Grandma, that sux. I remember when I was out in my coop blocking up all the little areas in the soffett (sp?) area where the sparrows were nesting. Oh Lordie I pulled down such horrible stuff and it floated in the air a long time. I feared I'd come down with something nasty and have to get rid of my flock, which I've wanted for so long. Nothing ever happened. And I'm glad that dirty job is over.
Maybe if you can't buy the professional kind of mask you should try wearing two at a time of those paper ones?? Better safe than sorry. The older our lungs get, probably the more fragile they get, depending on what we've done to them over our lifetime? I used to smoke but it's been over 30 years that I quit. I am ultra sensitive to smells tho. I've often said I'd rather lose my eyesight than my sense of smell. Dunno:confused: Take care of you-self!!

Olive, I loved the story about your hen helping your husband! That is so cool!

Chicken Grandma, I hope you are better soon

I have no advice other than wearing a good mask.

I did get some crud from cleaning out my nesting boxes in the spring. Had a sinus infection for about a month. Going to use a mask from now on.
