I am hoping to find some that are calm enough to be held by me or my kids. We have one that rides my shoulder. I have other breeds that let you hold them. We only have 4, so I just wanted 1 -2 more calm birds. I might just have to get a couple chicks in the spring.

Oh, sorry, I should have been more clear. It's not a breed thing or even an individual bird thing. It's an environment/training thing. It's not that I can't catch them because they're flighty, they're calm and docile birds, it's that I can't catch them because I've taught them not to be caught, basically. They would let you hold them once you got them home and treated them like pets. A few BYCers have taken birds home from here and had them for pets with no problem. There used to be a gal on here that updated every so often about two Light Brahmas that would sit on her boyfriend's lap. I had to catch those ones in the coop too. It's just that here our chickens are not our pets, so except for the couple here and there that the kids take a special liking to they simply don't get handled on a regular basis. They're calm, easy to handle and once they go into the coop at night they're even easy to catch, but during the day they free range and it's all big, wide and open out here; they're not used to being approached to be touched. They're used to being expected to stay out of the way so they move off when I walk towards them. It's just a training thing, it's what they've been brought up to understand from me. I walk toward them, they move off (because that's what I've taught them to do because I don't need them under my feet when I'm trying to get chores done), I keep walking towards them, they move off again, over and over until they're thoroughly confused as to why I'm chasing them around for no reason. In the coop where they know they don't have to move out of my way I can reach right over and pick them up. These ones just don't go in the coop anymore.

Oh, you could just have them if I could catch them. I'll look into the coop tonight and see if either of them is in there and let you know. There are two out there. I KNOW one roosts in the tree up front. She's already roosted for the night, as a matter of fact, I can see her from where I'm sitting. The other one might have found the coop by now though. I'll look. I should warn that they lay a slightly drabber green egg than most EEs as they are technically light OEs. They are out of BA hens by an EE roo. They do lay green eggs though, they're just a little darker than the usual EE green. They were born last winter, Jan or Feb, if I remember correctly so are almost a year old. If the other one hasn't found the coop yet maybe they will both be motivated to find it once the weather gets worse and I could let you know then. I'm a little less than an hour north of Lansing. A little west, but not much.

Daaaaaaaang, at that price I could buy a 40lb bag of food grade DE from my local feed shop and make a handsome profit! 'tis 14$ here, a special order kind of. They use it in some of their mixes, but if a customer asks, they bring in extra in their next shipment.

Finally went to TSC and got a heated dog water bowl for the run and I set up the big feeder my builder built for me. Fresh straw in the run and all cozy in the coop. While I was working out there I noticed that Penny, one of my ISAs had blood all over the side of her head and face. I brought her in and put her in the kitchen sink and washed her off with a warm cloth. All of the blood was dried already and I really couldn't find where it was coming from, but looks like a small spot on her head near her comb. If chickens are like people, head wounds bleed a lot, so it looked worse than it was. She was so good, never tried to fly away, even when I took her to the grooming room to put Neosporin on it.

I got my newsletter from MyPetChicken and chick orders start today. Anyone ever order from them? I have heard a few say they were really happy with the chicks they got and they advertise that you can order as few as three chicks at a time. They have a nice website that shows all the different breeds you can order, even the rare and heritage breeds. Not sure if I'm allowed to post this, but I'm sure someone will let me know if I wasn't supposed to: http://www.mypetchicken.com/default.aspx

Angela's chickens weren't the only ones experiencing their first winter....mine were too. They didn't know what to make of the snow & basically hung around the fire pit where they could nibble some grass and keep their feet out of that funny white stuff. I literally had to coax & chase them around and then manually put half of them back into the run when it was getting dark. I now understand the saying "Dumb Chickens". lol

first snow for mine as well, they did't want to go out. Stayed on the little cement entry to the coop for the longest time, eventually getting out to some of the grass that came thru the melt.
Funny sight, the 2 barred rocks were at the edge of a little ice pond, one stepped out on it and I saw that her foot actually slide a little, then the next step and her foot slid a little again. She crossed the little patch of ice looking like she was skaating. So cute.
