Yep, I'm thinking there was some comb pecking and as they ate it smeared all over the feeder. I found blood in one of the nest boxes awhile back and even after looking everyone over, couldn't find the source. Like Olive said, blood happens. That does seem to be a lot of blood though, so I can see why you were concerned.

chickmate, I don't have a coop that you could walk into, so lucky there. Also, I don't go into his, but when I stand at the door, its very noticeable. Today he just completely cleaned ALL of it, and burned the old straw. Put tetracycline in the water feeders to prevent the spread. The sick one has bounced back amazingly quick with the albon treatment. He's planning ventilation to go in this upcoming week with Andrew being home to help.

but, no, he has never walked in my chicken area or handled my birds. He is amazed at how well they are especially since they were out in the snow all day. And how clean too! Those little chicken feet prints in the snow are so cute! I took the written advice about cross contamination seriously. I stay out of other peoples coops. His girls haven't been out like they used too. They are only getting about an hour of free range time now, and they head strait for the woods. I asked why they just do not open the coop and let them out all day. The answer I got from Earlene was um, no. She is afraid they'll get sick being out in this weather. I won't argue. I like my neighbors. They are good people, but the chickens were Andrews and now he's off to college. Lol. But winters they keep em cooped.

I love my chickens and they love being outside.

Hello all. Seeing I had only one egg hatch out I was wondering if someone out there in Michigan land would possibly have a chick I could buy so mine would have a pal. It is awful lonely. When I go in to check on it it runs to my hand for companionship. Please pm me if you have one and not real far from me. I will drive some distance but not real far in this weather. Thanks.
It makes no difference what kind it is. I just want a friend for mine.

Sweet!! I can't wait to see pictures!! Maybe your hen was taking a small break. She might still take care of them if she is still sitting. Only one of my eggs hatched under my broody, she kept moving around with the chick and abandoning the eggs so I threw my eggs in the incubator. Once they hatched I snuck them underneath her ....well actually I didn't really SNEAK them....Blueberry was more than happy to take them.

Raz - looks like you might have yourself a bully. Watch them closely and remove the ring leader. I had to do that this summer and had her out of the flock for 2 weeks. But all is good now.

Well I spend the day baking cookies. My BIL is visiting and I figured I would bake up some goodies for him to take to my in-laws for Christmas since my DH and I really only exchange gifts between each other for Christmas and small gifts for our parents (our families are huge). The gifts this season are peanut butter cookies w/peanutbutter cup centers, ginger snaps, and shortbread.

Cool!! Can't wait to see pics!! Love baby animal pics.
Been wrapping all day. Oh what fun. Still lots to do. Too many kids, too many grand kids! lol
Took a break and went out for dinner with Krisrose. Had good time and good food. Waitress gave us lots of homemade goodies. Fudge is delish. It's not every where where you get good service and goodies to take home.
Raz, I came home late one day, and Krisrose had put my chickens to bed. Went in to check and there was a huge puddle of blood on the roost and a puddle in the shavings. I grabbed the chicken that was sitting in it and brought her in. She had blood all over the underside of her. Washed her off and could find... NOTHING! Look at her feet, her whole body and still nothing. Checked the other chickens, too. Where all that blood came from, I'll never know. The chicken walked out of the coop the next morning just fine.

Has anybody here tried to use grapefruit seed extract? It is supposed to be good for a wide variety of things, but i wanted to know if anyone here has tried it and what it's limitations are. I am thinking it would make a good "egg wash" too, since it's edible (people use it to sterilize their fresh cut veggies). I have read about the vitamin C thing with birds, but this has very little. In the right concentration, it's supposed to be 99% as effective as a pre-surgery wash the dr's use. I am wondering about people use too.

ya have to be careful using the liquid as a wash on wounds. Imagine lemon, only worse. Also... Great as a nutribiotic for people. We use it all winter long. Its great. I used it when I got ecoli poisoning from ok Michigan.. I have never used on animals tho...
