Taprock - If you gave Ivomecin two days ago and your hen is sick - could she be having a reaction to the ivomectin? Like a neurological reaction? Maybe the vets at MSU could advise.

mom, everyone is right about the rest! That stuff is serious.
Taprock?i have never come across this, but i have had a parakeet have a stroke before, so it is possible, i guess. In the case of vaccines, they will only shed the germ if they didn't "process" the vaccine or if they have just been done recently. In a disease like this, if they hadn't processed the vaccine they should have shown symptoms. PM'ing dawg was a good idea. If i remember correctly, he used to work for a vet's office. He has a lot of info on off-lable meds too. Ivermectin is an off lable wormer; did you worm with milder stuff first??? Sometimes if there are too many worms it can sicken or kill the bird when they all die at once. I would be VERY careful what chemicals you put on her right now. Do you have any diotomaceous earth? you could use this until the ivermectin wears off.... You might try feeding her cooked yolk from store bought eggs to boost her...
I can't remember who was asking about the guy in muskegon, but if it's Randy on evanston, he is a great guy! I have been there (no he don't let visitors in his coops) and he has a pretty good selection of birds there. I don't get the other person's comments because every time i've seen him he's been nothing but nice. A little quiet, but nice. This year his EE's should be straight blue. His number is 231-366-4406 or 231-747-9899 he works odd hours, so leave a messege. He has bourbon red turkeys too.
As far as my standpoint on my "closed flock" , you must remember that i am very open minded about medicine. I believe the cures are out there for a lot of things, and we are learning new things about how illnesses work every day. i have not made the decision to keep my flock lightly. That is not to say that i'd happily go around giving others sickness, but to say that i believe anything that shares dirt with wild animals is always going to be at risk. I just don't personally think that the wild birds have ever been "sterile" and since they are all over..... But i know many of you have had to make this decision, and i respect that. If your birds were suffering, than it was for the best. There is nothing worse than watching a helpless animal suffer.

My pink egger laid her first egg since the big molt! My blue egger went in and re-arranged the nest, so.....

I didn't think they'd lay till spring, not being bred for egg production.

My girls all got some respritory thing.

I refuse to give up hope.... They are all doing well. You'd never know. I only know cause after i've been in there a couple hours i hear sneezes. In my area this stuff is rampant.... especially at the auction that is 5 miles from where my birds are. I fed them some grapefruit seeds the other day, and it seemed to help. I want to either get some extract or some metronizadole to try. (I have been doing some heavy research on off-lable drugs) If you can't stop the spread of disease, there should be a way to at least cure it! I don't consider "carriers" cured; if you killed the bugs they should be gone. They can do it for people, why don't the dr's spend as much time researching cures for animals????

Randy is a VERY nice guy. That is where my blue Marans and my andalusions came from. He is very knowledgable also. He is shy but I always get him to loosen up some and laugh. He also has pheasants and guineas.

Fifelaker gave her chickens an antibiotic in their water and it worked! I would try that! Denagard is the antibiotic that she added to their water, I just remembered! My vet said that was a pennicillan and good for respiratory disease.

It was me.... As I had said, I have not met him myself... Just what I was told... But I have heard/read that all ya'll here really like him, so that is going to be my choice in spring for fav chicks.

so, should I just wait or give them something in the water to be on the safe side?
