ChicwannaB, I believe it is going to be the same place. Chickflick usually reserves it after the first of the year for sometime in June. I can hardly wait!

In Lansing.

Can anyone explain to me WHY some of my chickens have decided that NOW would be a good time to molt? One of my EE's looks like she exploded feathers overnight and two other EE's are starting to do the same. Also it looks like my NH's are going thru a molt.

Hey everyone! I hope your holidays were great. Mine were pretty boring til last night Aric announced I had yet to get my gift from him. He said he had to tell me because he needed my help to get it lol. ANOTHER PIG!!!

Not only was I excited to get her but I felt bad for my Bella who was acting pretty lonely. They're social animals so it wasn't fair to keep her by herself. So today we drove not too far from here (considering Bella came from Howell!) and WOW, she's half the size of Bella. I know they're 4 months in age difference and looking at the pics Bella was the same size at her age. It was just a shock because looking at Bella it's hard to believe!

After leaving the dog crate in the pen for a little while, Aric opened the door to introduce them

Looking at them this way I see Bella has gained a little winter weight from the extra corn...but so have I from the ice cream lol

Introductions went well for the most part. Bella wouldn't let her in the coop so we have Rosie in the extra large (it's huge!) dog crate with tons of straw in it. Tomorrow we'll add another coop and in the spring when the ground isn't hard we'll expand the whole run. I'm so excited!! Then next week thanks to ChickwannaB I have some eggs that are hatching

On Christmas Eve day I let the chickens out early, knowing I needed to leave for my daughter's house by 1:00 p.m. I wasn't too worried about rounding them up because they come running when I shake a bag or come out with a bowl in my hand. Around 11:30 I was standing at the kitchen sink with my macaw on my shoulder. Merlin sees a hawk, turkey vulture or any other large bird when it is only a speck in the sky and sounds an alarm. He let me know he saw a predator and when I looked up I saw a large red-tailed hawk land in a tree across the street in the gravel pit. I ran out and could hear him screeching over and over again. The chickens were all lined up in front of the house and literally frozen with no cover to run under. It had snowed and we had a good cover on the ground in most places but some of it had melted and they would only step where they could see grass or dirt. I started shooshing them toward the coop and 13 of them ran-hopped-flew into the covered run but two of them went under the deck. The hawk took off but the two under the deck wouldn't come out because of the snow on the ground. Of course, when I need to leave! I figured they would get over their fear and go to the coop when they heard the other chickens inside. Nope. I took bread crumbs and scattered them by the coop to entice them. Nope. Finally I got my broom and swept a path for them and dropped bread crumbs which they followed into the run. Today they walked on it with no problem.

Only got 5 eggs today, the fewest I've ever gotten since it got cold. At this rate my good customer will be disappointed when she doesn't get her 6 or 7 dozen eggs next week.

I literally had to coax mine out of the pen and they didn't venture far....they don't like the snow! They act like it's got cooties or some thing and hung around close to the pen. My little bantam Sparrow flew from the coop to the wood pile to avoid walking through it. That's approximately 35 ft and then flew back to the coop when she was done picking around. Guess they prefer their snow free pen.

M.sue - Sparrow is a hen? Sure looks like a little rooster to me. Such a beautiful little thing, makes me wish I wanted to keep bantams.

Just ordered some Euskol Oiloa (basque chicken) eggs for March. They sounded so interesting I couldn't pass them up.

Mutt - They do sound interesting! I had to Google to see what they looked like. Good luck hatching!
Keyt - Congratulations, Rosie is precious!!
