muppet-chickens.jpg

For a local parade when I was about 3-4, my family decided to do a small Muppets float. My Uncle was Gonzo, my siblings were Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Fozzy, and a cousin and myself were 2 of Gonzo's chicken pals. My mom made all of the costumes and I know the little chicken suit lasted quite a while, but I don't know if she still has it.
I think that may have been the start of my love for chickens.
I'll have to ask if the chicken costume is still hidden somewhere in the house. If it is still around in decent shape I'll try to get a picture of it.

That's cute!
I was just thinking that RaZ stole Gonzo's girls! Lol.
I was wondering how long a brooder box that's 8 square feet would last 12 chicks? I built one that is 4x2x2. Its 2x the size if what they re in now... And should I rig little roost? I had 9 at one point in a dog house coop that was smaller than this brooder box, but how long can I keep them in it? I figure in about a month, or 6 wks old, I will move them to the garage with the brooder lamp yet, get them used to that, nd give them an area to run around, until I get new coop built for them all. Lol. Chicken math really clobbered my butt! Lol. I will take a pick of my REALLY AWFUL brooder box. It cost me all of 7.80, an old cardboard box from a tv to make the back, bottom, sides, and I had the chicken wire... Small hole type... I made a lid too, and, its hinged by the flaps of the box! Lol. This box will never see the out of doors! Can you say red neck rigging at its best? The only thing missing is the duct tape... For now. Its not even square, because the wood I got was clearance because it was people not planed strait. Lol. I will post a pick later.
Have a great nite all! 42 is on cal, for Sunday here! Yeah! Not really. That's just insane!

I was going to say wasn't Gonzo a chicken groper also?

My first brooder was very red neck - it even had the duct tape - but it did the job. I took two huge cardboard boxes and duct taped them together and put wire over the top with a clamp light. It held 50 chicks until I sold 25 and then held the other 25 long past when it should have, but until the coop was finished.

Going to check on everyone and then off into the snow for an early meeting - taking my coffee with me. Enjoy your morning everyone.

Good Morning!

I went out and fed and watered and shoveled..

I do not like winter. Nope. We got a few inches of snow last night. Not enough to give me the right to whine, but nonetheless..

Winter could have stayed away, I would have been perfectly happy with that.

And I hope that my eggs arrive today, and that they werent frozen. :(

I totally agree with you. I HATE winter and I HATE cold. Would much better prefer to live in Florida !!! Sure hope your eggs arrive and are in good condition.

The chickies are not in it yet... I still need to put cardboard on the sides. BUT, here it is. LOL. This just cracks me up. I am goiing to run a 4ft dowel down the center so they can learn to roost. I wouldn't have bothered with the wire, but I figured cardboard would be too darn tempting for the dogs on its own. LOL I am going to duct tape around the lid, because ITS PICKY! Lots of pokey wire ends.

On geese and hay: You have to let them get a bit hungry when they don't have any other options. Once they figure it out they'll be set for life, but they have to learn that it's edible and worth consuming first. Put a bale of quality hay out for them, broke open, nice and fluffy, and leave them be for a couple of days until you've seen them partaking. After that, when you go back to feed, if they go back to not eating it you're feeding too much grain. Cut the amounts back until they're eating a fair amount of hay. Geese require very, VERY little grain.

In fact, geese "require" zero grain during the growing season when they have a wide variety of greens available to them. In the winter all you really want to be accomplishing with grain is as a small supplement to hay. They're not made to eat grain, they're grass and weed eaters and have evolved for hundreds of years as such.

That should be large enough to hold a few chicks. You still could line it with cardboard to help hold heat in and I would suggest using a 1x2 with eased edges, it would be much easier for the chicks to roost on.
