Chickmate- have you posted any pictures of your babies and broody? I have missed them if you did- and I need to go back through the pages.

No pictures Mom. I only had a cell phone to take them with and now that is dead. I'll have to get a disposable camera I guess.

Arctic snow owls have been sighted at Pt. Mouilee, so as we drifted down the Huron River I kept watching the trees along the shore hoping we might see one. On previous trips I've seen eagles, hawks, osprey, and great horned owls and it would have been nice to have spotted a snow owl. I've only seen one once before and spotting one of these rare visitors would have been fantastic.

I would love to see one of those beautiful snowy owls. I love the sound of owls calling to each other back in my woods but have never seen them.

Today I let Mama and the babies out while everyone was free ranging. They pecked around the yard right by the coop for about 15 minutes before she took them back to the nest and they took a nap. It was great, the whole flock, Mama and babies and the dogs in the yard together. The dogs are a bit curious but were more interested in eating the cherry tomato treats and smelling chicken butt than in the chicks.

Nova - Congrats on the bra baby! How do you know which chick came from which egg and hen/roo? I have four babies and no idea which egg they each came from. I put an ISA egg, a FBCM egg, a BR egg and and EE egg under Mama, but how to tell which chick came from which egg or who the Daddy is? Well OK, one of the chicks looks very BR so that's the BR egg, but Daddy could be my BR roo or the EE roo. Wish I could post pictures to show you all!

RBahmer - I'm so sorry about your lambs! I hope the Mama is going to be OK.

Farmerboy - I'm so envious of your sand!!

The banties were out and about today. Everyone is doing okay since the night attack a few days ago. Girly's wound is healing nicely. I blu-coated it so you can't see it in the pic. And yes, Mr Peanut, despite having lost most of his tail feathers is still large and in charge.

HELP!
I went to take care of morning bird chores. Went to fill Leila little bowl, she is out with the babies, and the last egg is still in the nest box. It was chirpingnyesterday. It is cold. Think its dead? Should I try putting it under skeeter?

CHECK OUT THE LINK IN POST #32444 . DON'T KNOW ,BUT THINK IT'S A GONNER.

Nova....I see the writing in the sky....Nova's Incubating Service.....You could make millions! lol The pics are just plain adorable...Congrats!

RBahmer.....so sorry for your loss. Fingers & Toes crossed for momma ewe....sounds like she is in good hands!

Opa & CR....Thanks for the advice. I won't be able to start this project til Sunday. My DH bought a Dremel Tool but I'm gonna go look at the ones they use on dogs like suggested (Pedi Paws). The one my DH bought is corded, he didn't think a cordless one would stay charged long enough to do 12 chickens. I told him if we decide on a cordless we might have to make it a 2 day event....1/2 one day & 1/2 the other. This is probably a somewhat simple chore but I must admit the thought of such a task makes me a little nervous.....just a teenie, weenie, little bit.

I bought one of those Pedi Paws for my dogs and it was a total waste of money. It might work for a chicken pedicure but I'm not sure.

Ive never heard anything good about them.
WARNING TO EVERYONE using a DREMEL-

be very careful not to get your hair caught in it.

Im serious. I use them at work when the clients bring their dogs in for a nail grind, as opposed to a nail trim. And TWICE, in the struggle of doing their wonderful nails I have gotten it stuck in my hair. Thought I was scalped the first time. Ripped a good two inch section of hair right out of my head. And it hurt. I expected blood to be running down my face. There was no blood. But there should have been.
The second time was the person holding the dog's fault. She didnt have a good hold, it was a large dog, it kicked and hit my hand with the dremel- and I pulled my head back, hair swung down- and next thing you know dremel was buried up in my ponytail. AFTER everyone else stopped laughing, it took two people to untangle it without cutting my hair.

You have been warned.

RAZ,

ALL OF YOU,

HAVE A GOOD LIFE

For some dumb reason I've been up since 420. The second pot of coffee has just finished brewing, so for those of you who keep forgetting to buy coffee, come on over and help yourself.

I've got to go to pick up my 87 year old farmer friend and take him to buy two new toilets. He has decided that he would like to have comfort heighth toilets and I guess you know who will be installing them. With two elderly neighbors who call on me for help, my farmer friend, Hope's stepfather, and Granny, it seems my life has become a geriatric marathon. Then I look in the mirror and realize I'm real close behind them.

Sunday I've got to head for Kentucky Lake. I wish it was for crappie fishing. When my dad was alive I kept a boat in a marina there for his use. Several times each year I would go down to go fishing with him. The first time I fished there I was shocked to discover that there was a minimum size limit of 10" on crappie. Here that would be a decent fish. After just a day of fishing I learned that crappie school according to age. If you are catching small fish, quit and move to another spot. If we weren't catching fish 14-15" we would move.

This trip I must go visit a younger brother who had been living in Granny's house. He now must live in an assisted living home so I am going to see what if any of Granny's things are still there and bring them back and also get the place listed with a realtor. For a place that had once held so many great memories having to deal with this is going to be more than a little sad.

Yes Opa, that will be a hard thing to do. But cherish the memories for they are forever.

Sounds like a tough day ahead Sam. I hope the good memories, also give you strength to get through the unpleasant task.

We just talked to my parents the other day about buying their home from them. Hopefully giving them a little income and piece of mind.. my worry is that when they need to sell it, the market won't give them anything or it will sit there for a long time etc. So we thought if we got it from them, they could get a fair market price etc.

Rbahmer, sorry about the sheep.

I love Dremels... I have a couple foot operated flex-shafts for doing my art work, but I also have a small battery powered one (the one sold for carving pumpkins of all things) that I use on my dogs nails. It's a bit safer to use cause it's not horribly powerful, but enough to do nails etc. You do have to use some safety smarts with them... like any rotary tool, no loose clothing, jewelery or hair that could get caught in them.

any time I do stuff to my birds I wrap them in a towel and cover their heads, and lay them on their backs. Should work OK for trimming nails. I noticed that my birds nails are a bit long so I'll be trimming them sat.
