That little black hen? She is a black Cochin bantam mutt. She weighs a pound tops. She's Oscar the great's sister. Or did you mean the little black chick? That one is Scatters. 3 of the blacks came from Skeeter and Scatter. Aster's 2 came out yellowish and one of Skeeter also came out yellow. Then Buffy had the other black baby because of Roger.
I don't do football... Never got the running around in tights and jumping on each other... Lol. I do understand the landgrab thou. Its like chess in a way. Only more dirty. Lol. I liked football in school when I played in co-ed gym. Hehehe. I mean, who wouldn't like to play football with the football team. Some of them guys were so hot! And now 20 years later, I am thinking to my self, boy how tastes have changed...

I was asking about the little black chick....Skeeters & Scatters...Cute names.

Good morning all!!
Bright and sunny day - I'll take all we can get this winter!!!

Snowflake, BobBry, my sister did approve of me having chickens. She wants to use the old coop up by the house which is a long way from the horses. There are a couple paddocks up here that are used sometimes. So I'm going to refurbish (polite way of saying its going to be a lot of work) the coop and build a sizable and secure run for them. I will only free range when the horses aren't using the near-by paddocks.

Thanks for everyone's concern and helpful advice. Sorry to here about your hen RaZ.

They still seemed long to me but my DH said that we couldn't go any farther because the vessels were right there.....possibly the longer the nail the farther out the blood vessel is?
Drake seems to be doing better... standing better balanced, quacking a bit more. I can't see that he is eating anything, but looks like he is drinking.
You can try an uncooked egg yolk. Get one from your healthiest hen. There are supposed to be antibodies and vitamins in there to help the chick, so i imagine it would help him too. Chickens go nuts over it.

OK, I know what Veena has wrong with her. She has a hard knot in her crop. So, gonna olive oil her when I can catch her.... Oh wait... No olive oil... Will regular safflower oil work?
you can put it on a bread cube to make it easier. Massage it gently a couple times a day too. sometimes you can loosen the knot. Egg yolk, or vitamin water to keep her energy up. Yogurt or buttermilk at the end, because sour crop can follow. If she's still trying to eat, try not to let her eat pellets or scratch. Best if she can stay with mush food (Cage her if you have to) otherwise it can compact even more, and of course NO GRASS.

I've always wondered about when they swallow toads and mice???? Mine go for them and i've always worried about them getting stuck in there or the bones poking their insides??????

I got my green rose
(Not as exciting as a chick, but i really wanted this)

http://www.aldershotgreenhouses.com/product.php?nv=&prod=17&act=p7menu1
Can't buy from here, but these are sometimes the ones in the grocery store (the 4" or 6" roses)

http://kansasgardenmusings.blogspot.com/2010/09/green-rose-surprise.html
this is the one i wanted the most, but on the aldershot site it looked more like the one i have, so i'm crossing my fingers....... What i found neatest is that these are actually 4' rose plants, no true mini's and that according to this person actually survived a zone 5 winter with no protection!!! So if anyone is wanting a "starter" rose, look for the "victory" roses at the stores! They are actually "shrub" roses and are supposed to be waaaay easier than the typical rose to keep alive! (we will see cause i'm definitly not a true green thumb)
