It's a balmy 9 degrees here. I have a meeting to go to so I think I will be lazy and drive to the chicken coop to check on them this morning.... and I'm taking my coffee with me. Have a great Saturday everyone.

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went out and gathered three frozen eggs- cracked down the side. Fed them, and the wild birds- and brought a waterer inside to thaw and fill.
WOW, am I am wimp! Bout froze to death.

I hate winter.

I'm thawing out with a hot cup of coffee and some french vanilla creamer.......I don't hate winter but I DISLIKE this bitter coldness. I thought my fingers were gonna crack off and I supposedly had on good warm gloves! The pen had a light covering of snow in it (the wind was blowing in all directions out here) so I took a shovel and flipped the straw around so that the snow was on the bottom. If I didn't do it those chickens would of never left the coop....they hate the snow.

Now I just noticed that I left the shed door open

so back out I have to go.

BobBry, I should start raising my own mealworms, care to share some tips. I don't have the time to read all of the post on that forum.

And lastly, I found this on FB this morning. http://www.heritage.com/articles/20...oc4f319c557ecfe370694379.txt?viewmode=default

I'll try to post some picts today

The only hot button I hit was when I did a random ramble about spelling and grammar usage. The moderators pulled that thread within minutes.Said it caused hurt feelings.

That was one that made me do some deeper than usual thinking, (for me that is) Most of the two following nights I mulled that one over in the ole bean. Even composed one of my most arduous responses, waxing philosophically , ---- then screwing it up by losing that beautiful [IMO] work of art to the cyber nether land of the internet. Leastways it better be lost after this.

finish putting sand in the last pen, then I am finished!

We are finished .. How often have I been wrong when making that statement.

I'm curious as what is all involved in the planning of having a meal worm farm but to be honest....those little things just gross me out. I can handle them dead & dry but to actually have a whole little community of those live things makes me shudder at the thought.

Hi Avalon, how it's your new Clyde baby doing? Such a cutie.
Another thumbs up for Van Attas. I also like the greenhouse in Eaton Rapids, can't remember the name. And Horrocks west side of Lansing has many perennials. And if you are in the north, Beneath the Willows in Oden (near Petoskey) is worth a trip.

Hey muttsfan,

the baby is doing good. Easton is leaving for AZ next week, Poor guy, he will go from 12 degrees to 70. How's life treating you?

About 3 inches of snow from over night. The cold crunchy kind that drifted deeper in some places and was swept bare from others. It's the 16 degrees that I'm not liking. That cold and my frostbitten fingers get achy real fast no matter what kind of gloves I'm wearing.

Better finish this cup of coffee and go check the chickies.

All hens are fine, the big girls were outside under the tent coop and the little ones were inside. The coop is a balmy 27 degrees. There was a slight ice crust on the waterer and as soon as I broke it off, everyone got a drink.

During the short time I was outside the temperature dropped 4 degrees. In fact it was so cold that when I tried to light a cigarette, the flame froze.
