homemade using natural products... Not like buying it already made in a package with the added preservative for extended shelf life... I think a cookie shouldn't have a 6 month shelf life... My favorite cookies to make are no bakes and peanut butter. I like oatmeal also, but.... I found that I can make pancakes and muffins using the same recipe, so it cuts down on storage of to many different ingredients. But when it comes to cake... I don't do it. Lack of control I love cake...LOVE CAKE!
I do use sugar. I love sweets too. But if I actually bake something, I just try and use natural stuff. Everything in moderation really. I will not use splenda, equal, nutrasweet.... I avoid seasonings with msg... Try for organic if possible. Raw sugar where I can...

Even though white sugar is frowned upon it's still pretty much natural unlike diet crap. I make my sugar from the trees and use it year-round in most of my recipes. Speaking of cake, my twins just turned 29 and both cakes I made used 9 of my organic eggs. The shelf life for two cakes for two boys is about two days.

One of the girls I work with has been to Tannery Creek, she says the meat is very good (although they didn't love the chicken). I would also check out Green Leaf Farms in Charlevoix, grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, and organic vegetables.

Never heard of it. My Aunt lives in Charlevoix and I'm surprised she hasn't mentioned it. Is it realitivity new?? She's been a local in area for over 35 yrs. Heading up there next week for a few days...I'll have to check it out. Thanks!!

That is the key secret!!

She obviously doesn't know you like we do. That should be, "Bio student by day, chicken groper by night."

I grew up with raw milk. There is nothing like Alpha-bits and cream, the breakfast of champions! That said, now I would never drink raw milk unless it I was the one milking and caring for the cattle. There are too many of what I call old school farmers up here. The kind that do everything the cheapest, easiest way and not what is best for the animal or health. There have also been a few farmers in our area that have had to get rid of their herds because of TB.

RaZ- Ginger and Pepper Uggo sounds good and Ginger is light colored and Pepper is usually dark so it kind of matches up with your Uggos colors.

John - Beautiful Barred Rock Chickens! And what kind of cake takes 9 eggs?

Weather update for Grand Rapids - snowy with a base of icy!

Good afternoon all! A little good news out of Jackson County. Residents in the Village of Grass Lake can now have chickens.

X2. Each to their own. I was not trying to force anything down at anybody's throat. If I get a chance to get married and have a passel of kids, I will give them milk straight from a healthy cow, right now, I just will drink it myself.

Its snowing a lot already. Almost 2 inches or so. I got the back door of the coop mostly done yesterday, and I can access cow shed without going outside much.

Now, I need to finish putting sand in the last pen, then I am finished!

I always got to have raw milk whenever we visited my grandparents in SC. I remember that it was so good! Daron, I may have to buy some from you if you have extra.

snowflake There was a farm in Coopersville you could buy shares from; not sure on the address. I will have to look it up again. I lost my info i wrote down. Do you know how much a share averages? I am interested too, but kind of depends on cost.

Fuzzybutt, I would love to get this info from you. It would give me an extra excuse to go see my friend in Coopersville.

Hi fellow Michiganders ...I'm new to this site. I introduced myself a little bit in the new member thread.....1muttsfan suggested that I come on over here and say hello. I live in the eastern part of the tip of the mit. Hawks is over by Rogers City. Alpena is mostly where we do our shopping...45 miles from us

When you move to the hunting property you pay the price of being in the middle of nowhere. Don't get me wrong we do love it here. Came from Millington (east of Flint) I had chickens there, but when we moved we only brought a few and they didn't take to much to the change so I am expecting 25 little ones sometime next week. So excited. Haven't had any chickens for about 5 years so I need to clear out the garden supplies from the coop and relocate all that to the barn. We have two calves and two piglets also. Plus my babies two Jack Russells Skip and Dixie. They re both going to be 4 yrs this year. Never have ordered chicks from a hatchery before so looking foward to see how that turns out. Been reading about some nightmares. Wish me luck. Nice to meet everyone and looking forward to the chats.....dascountry
Welcome das! Great people here and lots of laughs, not to mention all the good chicken info you get. Glad to have you!

My daughter and SIL live in Millington and so do my nephew and his wife. I grew up in Frankenmuth, not far from there.
All this talk about milk reminds me of the story about the woman who ask a farmer for enough milk for a milk bath. When he asked if she wanted it pasteurized she replied "No just enough to reach my waist".

Cold and wintery here. Yuk. Mama and babies are completely integrated back with the flock and nobody picks on the chicks!

In observing my four babies I think I have two pullets and two roos. I was really

for four pullets.

The little BR at the very top and the little whatever-it-is at the bottom both have pronounced combs already. The yellow chick and the other black one look like pullets to me. Worf, my EE roo is a very busy boy, but it looks like three of these are from Joe, my BR roo. Little yellow one may be Worf's daughter.

Daron - LOVE your business cards! Very professional and beautiful background. I have to say, reading your posts completely wears me out. You are one hard working young man! Your parents must be very proud of you.

HH -- If it's not too much to ask, do you mind sharing what the rate of lay is with your BRs? Just curious how prolific they are.
