SO CUTE! I wish my chicks were as friendly. I think it must have something to do with being broody hatched over incubator hatched... Their mamas tell them to RUN! Unless I come bearing peas and grapes...

I don't know if being broody hatched means they will not become friendly. I think the Uggos I got from M2M were broody hatched and they are now getting to be more friendly. They are still wary of the big girls and quickly scoot out of the way, but they have been watching me handle the big birds and are curious. Of course bribing them with mealworms helps a lot. I'll exclude the big hens so I can get more time alone with the Uggos. At ~9 weeks, they are too young for groping, but they are eating from my hand. I just have to keep working with them.

Maybe I just have a way with "taming" critters.

Raz, chicks that are hatched in a incubator tend to be handled quite a bit and to some degree imprint on the handler. Since a hen is the one doing the "handling" they tend to avoid human contact a little more.

Another question: Has anyone noticed a correlation between early tail feathers and sex? I have two chicks that already have tail feathers, the other three have nothing. I'm hoping it's not a roo thing.
I am not sure but it sure looks like something to watch, what age did you notice this first?

guess I hit this question twice, must be i found it interesting.
I have always heard that pullets get tail feathers first. Wether this is true or not I don't know but that is one thing I go on and mine has been right on.

Nova love your pics the chicks are so cute, how old are they now??

I just came back from a new feed store Jerry from Ada told me about, CN Sawdust, they have a lot of horse stuff-- chicken stuff is in the back, they had Buckeye feeds, a 50lb. bag of layer feed was 12.79 wood shavings 4.29 they are on 14 mile near Northland Dr. in Rockford. if you go buy that area it may be worth the ride. I think at $3 savings per bag even though they are a little out of the way for me if I plan on getting 4 bags at a time it would be worth the trip hr.s are Thursday,Fri. 9 to 6pm sat....open but I for got the hrs. not open Mon. Tues.or Wed. you can check them out on line.

For those of you with no will power for the newly hatched chicks, I can post some pictures of my Uggos. Those ugly beasts would turn Col, Sanders off chickens.
Raz, they are not ugly beasts, just beautifically challenged. As for the will power, since I currently have no energy due to a lovely sinus cold that developed yesterday that is not a problem for me right now. To my other resisters, while highly effective, I do not recommend using this tactic to resist.

Maybe I just have a way with "taming" critters.

So that's what you call it now.

The chicks I got from Avalon are right around 6 weeks I think... My babies are going on 2 weeks. Pins are starting to come in on 2 of Leila's chicks. Marketer charged the coop door today. I think she is getting ansy, and wants out. Gonna give her some shredded lettuce in a bit...

2 days off coming... What to do with myself...

Oh, and little cripple toes is fine. She's still got the bad toes, but she goes up and down the ramp just fine... Actually, I think she is an it at the moment. Its one of the ones I am not sure about yet...

I have been trying to post something for the last 24 hrs. I could read but not post. Do you know how frustrating it is not to be able to share my very first hatch with y'all?

I set 42 eggs. On day 10 I tossed 11. That left me with 31 and I had 22 hatch. 14 Icelandics and 8 Delawares.
