Kept the bantams on lock down today. They didn't seem to care for it, but I'm not taking chances after yesterday's disappearances. They seem so vulnerable and have been the only chickens I have that have been picked on by outside forces. Sigh.

Anyway, losing the two roos is getting me searching the web for other breeds. I was on My Pet Chicken just to see what they have and DH was interested in the jersey giants and I thought the salmon faverolles were neat. I know Nova loves her faverolles so I'm really thinking on that.

TSC, thankfully, is not an issue right now because according to the sign when I was in there yesterday the chicks don't start arriving until Friday and I stocked up on stuff so I won't need to go in there for a bit. Besides, I'm kind of thinking of getting more unique breeds than their basic supply of barreds, productions, and isa. We'll see. Then, too, maybe I'll try my hand at hatching a few. Who knows.

OH MY GOSH I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW! I just rolled out the trash bin...and the mailbox is completely destroyed. A plow blade ripped it up and then the rest was crushed. It was JUST FINE before dark when I went to go get the mail. It was a plow and not a sliding car because there are no car tracks (and the car would be stuck in the ditch if they'd lost that much control anyway), but a nice clean, snow free zone WAY over the shoulder of the road.. W-T-F. I know snow removal is important to clear the roads, but what screwhead plows so far into the shoulder, PAST the shoulder, and rips up mailboxes? It isn't the first time, but last time the mailbox was just nicked by the blade and not obliterated.

*SIGH* not what I wanted to deal with. I can't put the mailbox any farther back because there is an instant huge dip into the ditch. And it is pretty far back to begin with. I bet a few of the neighbors are also missing their mailboxes too.

I've seen a few mailboxes totally annihilated due to the plows. Not a worry for me, though, as mine sits on the other side of a big huge oak tree. I think the tree might win in that case.

My ducklings did not arrive today. The lady at Metzer said they were shipped out on Monday but the post office didn't have them when I called today.
Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I will have to make a trip to TSC tomorrow for sure, I have enough dog and cat food for one more day. They need a drive-through window so I wouldn't have to go in past the chicks.
RaZ - we shipped our 3 beloved pet chickens from Hawaii to Michigan when we moved here. It took 3 days. I actually took a tranquilizer on the third day because I was so worried about them.

One plant to consider for shade for your runs would be trumpet vines. I planted some and for 2 years they didn't do much however once they took off the amount of growth in a summer is unbelievable.

plus they come back every year

It's easy for me to walk out empty handed, because I always walk in empty-pocketed!

After 50 years in the construction industry I have managed to pick up a few pearls of wisdom. While the phenomena is not totally understood, once digit is injured it become magnetized. Once that happens a hammer attempting to hit a nail will be drawn to the injury site. Avoid hammers like a plague.

A bit of good news here. The duckling I rescued last week is back with his mom and sibs and so far so good. I just came in from a check-up and the kids were all under her as far as I could tell. Didn't see any stray little bodies elsewhere, unless dad was sitting on one. I cause a distraction while placing straw and food and slipped him in while the adults backs were turned. He seemed a little slow on chasing his sibs when they ran around but I think he'll get the idea.

If they knocked it down isn't their responsibility to replace it? We had a teenager take ours out in the fall and their mother's auto insurance company had to pay to replace it......reimbursed us for the new box, materials and DH's time spent putting it in. I'd make a call.
