Go to TSC. Buy a manure fork. Problem solved. ;)

Maybe I just need a manure fork with thinner / closer together tines, but mine doesn't cut it. (We don't have sand in the coop yet, just everywhere else

) I try to keep as much poop as I can out of the kids' playground area in the Summer, and so far a kitty scoop or a metal slotted spoon work best, but not when it comes to my back!

Wouldn't sand soak up the poop and pee and breed bacteria/diseases?

I use pine shavings. Seems to work best for soaking up, clean up, keeping things smelling okay and dry.

It clumps up and scoops out quite well! We switched from using pine shavings to sand in the brooder when they were little, and I was so happy with the sand. It smelled way less than the pine shavings, and stayed much dryer for longer. Of course, they were in the house at the time as well, so it mattered more and made a bigger impact.

Cleaning, and keeping the brooder clean, was so much faster and easier with the sand, I wanted to kick myself in the teeth for not trying it sooner. Also, they can't fill up their water with it.

Ohhh, and the dust. We used our spare bathroom to keep the chickies in the bathtub, and with pine shavings, everything was covered in dust. That stopped with the switch to sand too.

Am I trying to sell sand? Why do you ask?

I think most of the people who are considering sand have dirt floors to begin with. You can't power wash a dirt floor anyway.
Dirt is good for you!

I don't know how much "brush" or weeds you have, but since we got our two goats, hubby hasn't had to pull out the weed eater, or mow the bottom meadow. I take them for "walks" around the property and they keep everything trimmed.

Just a couple LESS honey do's

(Hi from Washington!)

Yep, we certainly have work for them around here, heh.

I'm sure there is a tale of chickens. Actually, I've red several.

Lol, I would have to write one of those smutty ones!

About the manure fork, Get some aluminum screen, (the ones not so close knit) and wrap it around the tines... OR, better yet, get hardware cloth, and wire that to the tines! Full size pooper scooper.

OH YEAH, I'M A GENIUS!

Hey, I am in my own mind!

That's a good idea! I may have to get a spare manure fork to do just that. I do have a little leftover hardware cloth. Plus, I can still duct tape it on!

LOOK AT THE FEATHERS ON THAT CHICKS FEET!

I want it. Can I have it?

Especially for you, Nova- I tried to separate them by feet..lol..and none of them would cooperate, and they were pooping, and wrecking my photo shoot...

Hey! Jump! You first! Wow, she really needs to DUST the table...

The clean legged crew- poopers as well.. These are the gang members who drop kick the other chickens. Feather-envy, Im sure:

And the somewhat feathered leg crew-
