Olive..your kitchen is too far away from me.
I would really enjoy seeing your farm, and learning how to can. My grandmother used to make grape jelly from the grapes off her vines.
I never paid any attention.

THen, when I lived with my Gram and Gramps in Tennessee, I was too busy being a teenager to pay attention when they canned EVERYTHING..back then, I was trying to find a reason NOT to be in the kitchen with them...now I wish...

I know. I'm a long ways from you and Raz, both.

The written tutorial might do the trick though. It really is very easy to can. If my 10 year old daughter can make jam, you can, too.

My Grandpa always kept a big garden and did all the cooking and canning. He passed when I was sixteen and hadn't a clue these things would ever interest me. Now I wish he was around to talk to about this stuff. Many of his recipes were lost when all the stuff was split amongst the family. It makes me so sad that it's all gone. Food is important to me, so it's one of those things I would have really liked to have passed down.

Does the chickenstock pavillion have a kitchen?

No. But if you are talking about a canning exercise, I usually can using my turkey fryer out on the back porch. I'm not sure that it would be feasible, but maybe we could do that at Chickenstock when we all gather.

Or a homebrew gig?

WOOHOO! PARTY AT OLIVE'S!
HH, I have been having posting problems on my regular computer, phone still works ok
In a moment of weakness I ordered silkie eggs. Then, conveniently forgetting it, I ordered more silkie eggs. Then in a moment of rebellion (Don't you have enough chicks already?) I ordered more cochin bantam eggs.

Dont you LOVE those rebellion moments? Donr say I have enough, or say No, because now I have to do it...just to remind you that we are partners,,,,not you the parent and me the child....lol.

SAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAN YOU HEAR ME?

How did it go at the doctors today ? I hope all went well. My daughter only has hearing in one ear...and she can be quite comical. Thought that the Civil War was the Silverware war where they fought over silverware...couldnt figure out why someone didnt just go out and buy more forks and spoons and stop fighting...lol...

We have adapted quite well. She makes the most of her disadvantage. I just plan on being a crabby old person- WHAT?! WHAT DID YOU SAY???? *swinging my cane* Even now, I am the most miserable person to be around when I have a stuffy head and plugged up ears...cant stand it. You have my sympathies.

On the other hand, if anyone has the insatiable urge to learn how to build a barn, you should feel free to stop by and absolutely bring your own materials. I'll be happy to supervise.

But I always store my onions in the fridge anyway, seems to burn my eyes less that way. It's also really bad to thaw your meat out on the counter but I've been doing it for many years and here I still am, haha.

It is true, they don't burn your eyes as much when refrigerated, though I forget why. If you are having trouble whilst cutting them, you can hold a match stick between your teeth, phosphorus end out, and it helps neutralize the fumes before they reach your eyes.

Ive never been a big fan of Oprah, but she does have some pretty good ideas. Same with Martha sometimes. I wonder if I'll have any time this weekend...maybe I'll try it if I do, it's supposed to be raining all weekend I guess. Store boughten...haha. I have to find time to do homework on top of all the other chores I have so hopefully I can spare a couple hours to make this. I'll have to let you know how it turns out!!

I feel the same way, I cry inside if I end up doing a craft with my kids that's "made by Martha".

I take comfort in the fact that the blasted woman certainly comes up with next to none of them herself.

Canning isn't that difficult, just start with something easy like tomatoes or green beans. I've canned with both pressure cookers and simple boiling. For lunch I had a jar of green beans that I canned with a garlic clove. The date on the lid was 2010. So if it kills me, I'll post tomorrow and let you know.
I read a magazine article that claimed that most summer food poisoning came from the onions going bad and not the mayonaise. I can't vouch for the validity of the article but I'll keep open onions until they get soft and mushy. But then again, I eat raw hamburger.

I am hoping to get around to making a solar oven this Summer and trying solar canning out. Never managed to get to it last Summer.

Goodnight everyone...

Time for me to crash. I can no longer keep BOTH eyes open.
My kids are out riding their bikes..they better know that they have to get home before it gets dark.

I am wiped out- and thankful that I no longer have to stay up until the kids go to bed. Its a teenage perk.

See you all for coffee in the morning.

Which reminds me, the other week, when you posted pictures of your hops, I ran out with a flashlight to see what mine were up to because I hadn't gone to look at them yet and I was excited by your hops progress. They weren't there.

I am not sure what happened, they were fine last year.
