Hi everyone..so I posted a few months ago when DH and I were researching chickens and preparing to order some. Well, about a week ago we went into TSC and bought home 6 babies! They were labled as straight run Reds but 3 of them are very obviously not reds [I am thinking BR or Australorps]. It was near the end of their chick days and I think they just put the leftovers all in the same bin or something. Anyway they looked really healthy and so far are doing really well, getting big and feathering out. They are about 2 weeks old so I'm excited to get our Coop/Run put together and get them outside in a few weeks. Thought I'd reintroduce myself since I'll probably be posting more frequently =)

Good morning everyone! Got a ton of rain last night! :ya

Liked all the pictures! Congrats on the chicks!

I got to meet Olive and her family yesterday!!! They are a very cool family!!

This is what we brought from them, and Olive and her family delivered them to our place!

:love

They declared war on the nice grass right away, and ate them all before the sun went down. This morning, the pen was one muddy, turned up ground. :th

This morning I was on my way in to work..... and I see a tiny bird in the road... thought it was a sparrow or something till I looked in my mirror.. and saw that looked more like a chick and it's hunkered down on the line. I thought sure as heck the bugger would get run over or may already have been. (I wish I got a picture of it). So I backed up.. opened the car door and scooped it up... it was a baby woodcock! He was not moving, so I turned around and stopped at the house to show my DH. Turns out the chick was fine and perked right up, so I hoped back in the car and stopped where I found him. I saw his mom at the edge of the road so I put the chick down at the edge of the road and he took off running, holding his little wings straight up and out! I waited to see that mom found him watched them head into the field, and then headed on to work. I've not seen a woodcock in years!

The chick looked like this one.

In case no one knows what a woodcock looks like... they're a very reclusive bird.

Have a good day everyone!

Piggies!! :D So jealous. We just can't afford a place with enough room for them. They are so cute!

thesun: HI! :) I got my girls (all were labeled pullets) and they told me they are ameracuanas and ISA Browns. I'm not quite sure; I can't wait to hear what you have in a few weeks!

I'm thinking you need to sell me a baby sow or two!!! I thought about contacting her about the pigs, but I'm glad you got them! But... I'd be interested in a piglet!

Hey everyone! Long time no see!!

I have a question and I thought this might be the best spot to ask.

I have 9 BBB turkey poults (1 month) that have almost outgrown their brooder box on the enclosed porch. I have another brooder out in the barn I'd like to put them in because it's taller and they wouldn't be able to jump up and hit the top. One did and broke it's neck last week.

I know all about the blackhead thing and the debate over putting turkeys with chickens. Here's where I'm having an issue. The brooder in the barn is a wall of the barn on one side, the wall of the 2nd brooder on another, poultry wire facing the front of the brooder and a poultry wire wall that shares with the chickens. So in other words, the turkeys and chickens wouldn't have actual access to each other but they share a poultry wire wall. Hope that makes sense. Anyway, would that be ok? This would only be for a month or so until we're able to put them in their own enclosure. I probably could now but I want them a little bigger.

Welcome back to you sunandmoon!

I hope everyone posts photos of their new chicks! Remember, in a straight run you can get roosters too.
Isa Brown Females are rust/orange color and Isa Brown Males are yellow colored if that helps anyone.

Fabulous Pigs Farmerboy! Do you have a mom and piglets in the barn plus 5 others outside? Are you planning to breed them? What type are they?

Sillychicken! Great job saving the little woodcock!! I am very thankful for people like you!

Chicken Grandma, even our other silkie, Shmoo, is rough on her now. They used to all get along quite well, so I'm not sure where the attitude change came from. She is smaller than all of the others, Shmoo included, so maybe that's the issue.
Other than Shmoo, I no longer have any smaller birds. There's roost space for a few more bantams, but I don't think they have enough coop/run space in the winter for more than 5-6 birds. After seeing how she was being treated, I considered picking up a couple bantam chicks to raise and see if she would fit in with birds closer to her size. I may end up either getting a few smaller birds or try to find a new home for her if this bullying continues.

I have banties coming out of my ears! If you want some, you are welcome to all you want. They are about six weeks old. They were just chicks when we met with the Uggo roos.

That sounds like a good plan Ferrett. I don't think once they are getting beat up that it ever ends well.
Please let us know how we can help you with her.
Where are you located?
I know Mom2emall has a lot of banties right now. And they are teen agers so they would be easy to mix with your Silkie. She could hold her own with them. But the question is always space, you might need a second coop. Or maybe just a crate in the garage for a little one(s) at night.
Keep us posted.

YEAH Chicken Grandma!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for remembering me...and my chicken hoarding crisis!
