Hi all. I am back now. Lots of changes happened in my life so I was gone for awhile. My husband and I are no longer together and I have moved but life is good. Had to sacrifice a lot of my chickens for this but I still have my Marans and Penedenseca's and a few other breeds. Good to be back. Lots of names I haven't seen before so welcome newcomers.

Well, one chick is out! We went to Impression 5 Center today to pass the time so I don't touch the bator.

Lots more pipping going on in there. The one that's out is from the mixed birds I had at my house for a couple days. I was putting eggs in anyways and decided to throw them in as well. This one is a lot cuter now that it's fluffed up...I think it looks like a T-rex...cause it's got a big head and little arms!

Woo Hoo Daron! You are really building your farm back in a hurry! Baby pigs are do darn cute. It's great that you are maintaining a heritage breed as well.

In case no one knows what a woodcock looks like... they're a very reclusive bird.

Hey SC, so great that you stopped. I see so many people just run right over birds in the road. I've picked so many up, or moved them off the road at least, but never have seen a woodcock for real. Pictures in books, but never a live one. Very cool looking bird.

Robin, so glad to have you back. I'm sorry about the split, especially after 32 years.

I only managed to keep it together for four. We're here for you.

I love the little guys. I was excited last year that this momma what gonna have some babies in the back ( she was sitting on 4 eggs) but something ate all her eggs.

Boy, I really had to look for awhile to see her. It's amazing how camouflaged they can be.

Nice quiet rainy morning, except now the rain has stopped and it's getting nice an warm. I have a pair of Belted Kingfishers making a buffet out of my pond. They come every year, but it's usually two males who fight for the territory. This year it's a pair. He dives down and comes up with a goldfish and shows it to her before he slams it on the branch to kill it (or maybe tenderize it) and then down the hatch. They sure are loud, you can hear them coming from quite a distance. I also have several pairs of wood ducks and Mr. and Mrs. Mallard.

I was sitting out in the yard, completely enjoying my flock of too many, when there was a large shadow- I looked up and it was that stupid black eagle thing that usually patrols a half a mile from here...he was so low, My chcikens DOVE for cover- and I leaped to stand above my new Carmen hen.

She was in the middle of a dirt bath (nothing like dirt in an incision to help it heal..*sigh*) and only had enough time to stretch out like a skinny snake when it went over.

It disappeared as fast as it came.
I have never seen it thaat low before..much less, scouting my yard.

As if hawks werent enough....

On the corner about a half mile from here, they have some sort of duck farm. Illegal to own farm animals here, except them. Their ducks always cross the main road to swim in the creek- and there are about a hundred ducks at any given time. I dont know what the house does- they are in the middle of a industrial strip...well this black eagle thing always patrols there.

Now, it cant be a black eagle because according to the Google bible, they only live in Asia. ITs bigger than any hawk I have ever seen. Appears to be solid black- however, that may not be the case, but it sure looks like it.

It is not a turkey vulture.

Mom - There are only two species of eagles in the US, Golden Eagles that are only found in the Western US and Bald Eagles that are found all over the US. So if it's an eagle it would have to be a juvenile Bald Eagle. More than likely, if it's larger than a hawk, it's a turkey vulture and you don't need to worry about them. They only eat carrion. I must have a rookery over here by my house because they circle over my yard all the time. Hmmmm, maybe that means something? Anyway, they don't attack live chickens. My chooks watch them all the time but the roos don't even alert most of the time anymore.

eta: Ha ha! We were posting at the same time and I saw where you said it's not a turkey vulture. What makes you think it's not?

With all due respect, I don't think I would trust M2M in identifying anything with feathers.

Look at her track record, thinks baby ostriches are chickens, thinks velociraptors are chickens, and then tries to pawn these mutants on the rest of us.
