I just watch a utube video off of another thread. This guy built a cute simple little coop and run... I am going to steal his idea for my silkies.

Ooh,Ooh, which one? Can you post a link? Chicken math is taking over and I think I'm gonna have to do the.same. My daughter and I are trying to decide which colors to get,( you just know we're gonna end up with one of each). I asked which one was her most faaavorite,(she's 4) and she.just laughed and said "mamma I like them all". Good grief she sounds just like me.... It's like the fox guarding the hen house...

Tee-hee! Hi there! I have a bunch hatching out Monday/Tuesday and I can NOT wait!!!! I bought a used LG incubator and I'm pleasantly surprised at how it's working :) I put two of my turkey mix eggs in there and when I candled at 10 days they were developing awesome. I have to candle again tonight if I have time... the suspense is killing me! I know I should wait until lockdown - since it's only Sunday - but, but, buttttttttttttt! It's so hard to wait!

OK, sorry folks. Just realized I didn't hit the reply to button! This was for you Ashley

I read something on another forum (QUAIL) about putting the eggs in warm water DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS BECAUSE I AM NOT SURE I REMEMBER IT RIGHT...
Bad eggs float at the top - throw them away?????
Good eggs float in the middle... still under the water?????
Good eggs with babies sink??????

Does anyone find this a good way to check the eggs
I am afraid they would drown. I guess you have to be quick!

That's a cute idea.. however... I see a few things you may want consider

The roof is flat, so it wouldn't last very long. you could use a sheet of metal or something to cap it or put a bit of a angle on one end to give it a little pitch but don't angle it toward the end you go in to get eggs! I know he said he sealed it but... the edges of OSB are hard to seal and they could siphon water in at the edges. Also, the slide locks.. are not coon proof, buggers are too smart for their own good! I'd use the lockable hasps.

I also think he needs another set of vents on the other side... but I'm not sure on that one.

The PVC, would not hold up under any kind of snow load. You may want to consider a simple center support to help hold it up. ( a 2x4 ?)

The chicken wire would not stand up to predators, coyote, coon, dogs, will seriously be able to chew right through it!! Consider using hardware cloth, it costs a bit more, but, it's stronger. Plus, the chicken pop doors, are not locked, so if something got through the wire, they could get in the coop. Another thought, may not be a big deal, but the crack along the top edge would allow rain in, and provide a toe or tooth hold if the predator is determined enough. Worrying about that may be over kill idk.

You may also want to dig proof the sides unless this is something you plan to use more as a tractor (or only use temporarily) that you will move about the yard.

Ok, so do Silkies roost or not? Somebody told me that they just cuddle up together in the corner of the coop....is that right?

BackyardFarmMom, won't that ruin the bloom?

Oh yeah. I was just showing my mom the video, and I said, That I'd slant the roof, instead of the Lshap on the run, I'd just do detachable strait runs so I could easily drag the coop around. I was thinking I'd also T frame the runs out with some wood. I don't think he has a predator problem, It looked like his back yard was wood fenced in. As for the drop doors... I like how he has done that, but I agree... Not very pred proof especially with chicken wire runs. SO, I would have to do the hard ware cloth runs. I was also thinking, I could do an A-Frame run that is MY height thru the middle and just open the pop up doors the same way I open the other chickens doors. BY OPENING THE DOOR myself. I could also plug and fill the PVC with sand and then bend them into place to make them more sturdy... I will play around a little with it. I have several weeks until the silkies will be ready to go OUT. I could also just use the broody coop/dog house... BUT I like having it as a broody station...

I am so frustrated! I just finished typing my responses when the toddler toddled by and with one casual swipe hit a button which closed my tab and I lost it all. So you are spared for now, I will have to try again later.

By the way, those of you that complain about of chattiness overnight... I am pretty sure you all are much chattier in the morning, and I am wayyyy behind by the time my day starts and I have a chance to log in.

Oh, one thing. Ghostbusters. PG. Would totally not be rated PG today. Boy how what we, as a society, see as acceptable for children has changed in the last 30 years. I didn't really remember Ghostbusters, but I remembered that I, my brothers, and like, every kid we knew, loved it when we were little, and I recalled the basic premise, but not any of the details...

So. I rented it to let our daycare kids watch one snowstormy day, and.... There was so much swearing, drinking, smoking, sexual innuendo, the list goes on! Holy cow, I had to turn it off. I would have been in so much trouble! I couldn't believe it, I didn't remember any of those things! The keymaster / gatekeeper scene in the bedroom almost made the kids' eyes fall out of their heads!! If it's PG, that movie makes what Raz said a G rated comment.

(Okay, almost deleted that last comment, actually I did once, and then I put it back and decided to clarify instead. I am not commenting on whether anyone should or should not have found it inappropriate, but what with the link someone put up to Ghostbusters I found it a very interesting study in what is acceptable for kids now, and what was acceptable even in my childhood, which I guess I am sort of dating by saying I was very young when Ghostbusters was out.

That movie was fine for everyone I knew to see, and I was soooo shocked when I tried to show it to our daycare kids!)

And, speaking of my age, Nova, I have been debating ever since I met you whether or not I really want to ask how old you thought I was when you asked me oh-so-incredulously!

Both of my silkie hens used to roost. Minnesota Cuke, she would roost right next to Mr. Fluffers. She was top hen till the hawk got her. Leila would roost right next to her. SO yes, some do roost. Roger roosts 18 inches up off the floor. SO, provide the roost, or a few at different levels, and see what they do. I think if they have them, they use them.

My silkies all roost. Moesha has the best spot on the top roost (5 ft off ground), that is when she's not broody! My lowest roost is 3 ft high. I have a ladder so the smaller can get up.
