Hey if anyone is interested in a pet bird like a Cockatiel or a Sun Conure, there are quite a few available on RescueMe.org
which covers the whole state of Michigan - so there might be a nice bird in your area available at low or no cost! Check it out!

Nova...I agree with Silly. I also don't like that the doors fall with the string still attached... I would be afraid a chicken would get caught in it. I like the doors that slide up...but they can be like guillotines! I like the idea behind the runs but am not happy with the lack of safety. Anything that can dig or chew through will... chickens and eggs are soooo yummy!!!

Wowzers! Did he just light up knowing that! He wasn't aware anyone in MI had those.
He really likes the heritage breeds and wants to go that direction in the future. He would like them to have a strong foraging ability so that a good portion of their food comes from the foraging.

Grit Magazine had a nice article about heritage hogs last summer that may be of interest to your husband. The article can be found at the link below.

I read something on another forum (QUAIL) about putting the eggs in warm water DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS BECAUSE I AM NOT SURE I REMEMBER IT RIGHT...
Bad eggs float at the top - throw them away?????
Good eggs float in the middle... still under the water?????
Good eggs with babies sink??????

Does anyone find this a good way to check the eggs
I am afraid they would drown. I guess you have to be quick!

I'm going to have to say no. This is how I check eggs for eating if I am not sure how old they are, like if I have found a little stockpile where I didn't know anyone was laying and have no idea when they were laid. I can't remember the exact time periods, but it is something like:

Eggs laid in the last few days lay flat at the bottom of the glass
Eggs laid a week or two ago sink to the bottom, but float at an angle at the bottom
Eggs laid more than a couple weeks ago sink to the bottom, but float straight up on end at the bottom
Eggs that are bad float to the top.

So I would guess that while it may be able to tell you that an egg is bad, a sinking eggs does not mean there is a baby. None of my eggs are fertilized, so I am quite sure on that score.

Well it's raining here, I can't do a thing outside & the chicks have to stay in the garage today.

Juise... it was for "candling" eggs out of the incubator. So definitely no go there!!!
Nova... sorry I was responding while you had commented again before me posting...

Ok, thanks. I'll be sure to put a roost in. I think I'm gonna need another coop and run for the Silkies. I currently have 4 BCM's and a LF cochin out there now. And my first hatched loner chick that I recently moved outside, when he was kicked out of the house, I divided the coop in half with chicken wire so they could all see each other but not pick on my little guy...But when I finally put him outin the run with the others after about a week, the 6 month old pullets kept chasing and beating up on him so bad that I took him back out. I know that pecking order is normal, but this little guy is my replacement Rio for my big guy who is getting old. I think I will wait till he's a little bigger before I try again. The older hens and my rooster leave him alone, just the older pullets being nasty. Ugh! I don't want those big bully girls beating up on my Silkies. They wo.t be put out for quite a while, and they will be growing up with a couple ameraucanas and orpington chicks in the brooder. I hope that will make the difference.Otherwise, I will be building another coop and run.

Olive - I'd like to reopen the discussion about hogs in MI. I'd still love to get a couple Heritage hogs myself someday.. soon. I was reading the invasive law and it was vague in the descriptions.. Everything said wild, feral etc.. but then they said old world swine.. well, that included everything basically! LOL! Did the state provide you any info on what they're looking for, what they consider feral, invasive and safe to own?

I sent an email to the DNR yesterday asking a few questions about the law but haven't gotten a reply yet.

If you rather take this off line, please PM me.

Thanks!

What the hell is going on up there!?!?!?!? It's like we live in Soviet Russia or Castro's Cuba now!

*sigh*

They did NOT raid "farms" they raided hunting ranches.

More hyperbole, more misinformation, more fear mongering. Again.

And I'm sick of that sort of thing. My guess is that those pigs and other species of organisms are not contained sufficiently to prevent their escape, and they are predator free so they multiply (like fast) in the wild. There is a large concern about the spread of this sort of stuff. We could have here, the same thing that exists in most southern states, significant destruction of public lands by feral and wild imported for "sport" pigs. I support the DNR in this and have no sympathy or respect for the people who help to perpetrate this debacle. That radio person is a great example of one of the major things wrong in the USA today. And yes I am aware of free speach.

Just asked my son to help me get this done (problems deleating) and he said, " Why are you bothering with this?". I guess I'm peed off.

I'm hundreds of posts behind and not posting much at all. Just had to get this one off my chest
