You guys really have to stop talking about gaming. You just can't be gamers. You seem like such nice people otherwise.

Thanks Juise and HH for the brooder lamp advice. I am probably just too worried about the actual temp...I know they say the the chicks will tell you if they are cold or not. HH, will have to try a different lamp other then the 250watt to see if that makes a huge difference.

Juise - sorry to hear you are sick (are you brooding?) and sorry the little one got all bonked up. It is only by the grace of God that one of our three have not ended up like that. Our oldest boy flipped his bike on the asphalt last year and his face looked a little like your girls, but it is totally healed now and there are no lasting scars!

b737drvr, another bit of advice...make sure that the lamp is very secure in more than one place. Too many fires have gotten started by those heat lamps. When my chicks were in the house they never required any thning higher than a 100 watt bulb. Usually a 75 watt was plenty good enough.

Yes, yes, yes! I can't agree more. I had two different chains attached to different places to secure mine, and also the hanging device that comes with them should not be trusted. You can use it, but make sure it is secured elsewhere as well.

ladyfeather - Ack! I haven't had to take them to ER for falls, (yet!) although #1 has been twice for eating, or possibly eating, really, random berries outside when she was little. First time was nightshade, while walking with Papa down to the mailbox. He was even holding her hand. Grab, stuff face.

The second time she was a wee bit older, and I we were out weeding the veggie beds. She had moved on to weeding the lawn right behind me, I pulled a weed, I looked at her, she's picking dandelions, I pulled a weed, I looked at her, and she was crouched down by the lily of the valleys.

Did you eat any? "Yes." How many? "Too many." How many? "No." You didn't eat them? "No." Pried open her mouth, couldn't see anything, but.. what do you do? They are terribly fatal, so we took an ambulance. You just can't take your eyes off those buggers for a second or they're trying to kill themselves.

P.S. lvl 85s: shadow priest, paladin, and hunter, 80 warlock, 69 warrior, 65 rogue, 61 shaman, 60 DK, 49 mage, lvl 24 bank alt, (how did that happen, lol?) I have a handful of other chars on other servers, but I haven't played them in some time so they don't count.

Whenever my DW gets sick, that is the first thing we think of. She has had SEVERE morning sickness for both of her pregnancies!

Seems to be okay concussion wise, still not positive about her nose!

Yes, as nasty looking as it is, I can't stop thinking about how much worse it could have been.

:/ Signs of concussions aren't always immediate. Keep a very close eye on her behavior. Anything out of the ordinary should be a warning sign, such as irritability or restlessness. In many cases, problems can start showing hours after the event, if the brain begins to swell at all and increases intercranial pressure. The brain has some coping mechanisms for increased intercranial pressure, but that is very limited, which is why symptoms can be delayed.

Edit:

I'm pretty sure I caused my parents SO much stress as a kid. I personally had three major concussions by 5th grade (bad enough for loss of consciousness), hah. I am sure it had a cumulative effect since sometimes my short term memory recall can be a bit dodgy. One was in gym class in 1st grade, then in 3rd grade I fell down some stairs, and in 5th grade I slipped on ice right outside the school and whacked my head on the pavement. Yep, all done at school!

OMG! Poor baby!

My kid hurt my duck. He scared the crap out of Nina, and she was hauling it out of the pool cuz he decided he wanted to stand on the sides and pretend he was doing some sort of ride em cowboy thing... or his version of dancing, I don't know... Poor girl is limping. I checked her leg, it looks ok, so I think its just a sprain... My ducks are named Nina, Leiha, Laia and Morrey. Its funny, cuz Morrey was named that because they thought she was a boy. And they didn't believe me when I told them it was a girl. Not until she pooped out an egg. DUH! LOL

Aiden, he's been to prime care 2 times for those types of injuries. I thought for sure after the second they were going to call the cops on us. I mean, sheesh! And yesterday he was running in one direction, looking in another and ran face, well teeth first into a pole. Thought for sure he was going to have his teeth fall out. AND THE BLOOD! Yup. And then today, he's running with my metal rake, trips up over it and caboshes his noggin on the cement. I swear... Kids do their dangdest to give us heart attacks.

Whats the fasted way for me to put Veena down? I think I am going to have to do it. From what I was reading, with repro things... She's not moving so well today... SO not well that one of the younguns was able to mount her, and then she kicked his ***, then went and laid down panting for a bit... Then got up and went wandering... She is still eating and drinking, but, I think with the reproductive issues... I may just call the vet. It was easier putting Aster down, she couldn't take off, and I had the neighbors help.

Lol, my husband is the same way every time I feel the least bit sick to my stomach.

I get very ill, as well, and I don't know about her, but there was no "morning" limitation to my sickness, and it lasted all 9 months for both. Ugh.

Stacykins - Thank you, I am keeping a close eye on her and am not unfamiliar with concussions myself.

You can't tell really in the picture, but the bruise on her forehead is really really swollen, she's got quite the egg. Better out than in, though.

Nova - Sorry about Veena

I'll be in St. Ignes on Saturday! My niece and nephew are in the highschool play. My neice is the lead. :)

PM'd you

Hi everyone :) jumping in and getting my feet wet :p another new chicken mama out of Manistee, figured I would pop over here and see what the Michigan thread was all about :)

Hi Mzkynd :D

I have the 250 watt red bulb and if I orient it straight up and down, it is well over 100 degrees directly below the lamp.  (approximately 18" from lamp to floor) If I mount it at an angle then it is mid nineties in the middle of the brooder.

I also only use a 100 W bulb. I let the chicks tell me if they are warm enough, I adjust the light until they lie under it without piling up. And x2 on the double securing it - and not with plastic.

Oh Juise! That poor baby. Give her extra snuggles tonight.

My youngest was helping us on the coop yesterday and stepped on the dolly and....you guessed it, smacked himself right under his eye. The boy's lucky it didn't split his eye open. He's got a nifty shiner today though. Then his brother hit him in the head with the bathroom door(I stopped asking...lol) on the same side of his face. It's so sad, I'd almost say it's cute.

OH! I keep forgetting to ask.. What exactly is ChickenStock? Other than something I cook with?
