OK, I am bringing down my wrath upon all my broodies. Well, not really. BUT I just put three of them in my new BROODY BUSTING cage. A big dog kennel with a wire floor (and surpringly the floor space is perfect for chicken feets to walk on. They're in there with food, water, and are shaded and protected from rain.

The only broody who managed to hatch a single chick just had it killed today, by another broody. I found it in the killer's nest pecked to shreds. My guess is that the momma was taking her baby out for the first time (it hatched a day and a half ago) and it toddled into the angry broody's box. This is NOT the first time that particular hen has killed chicks.

She the killer, and two others got the boot into the busting cage. The one who I know is a great Mom will get a few more eggs to set on, and if the one with the killed chick goes back to being broody, she'll get another shot too.

I hate having 5 out of 7 trying to brood, and even more when broody anger causes chick deaths.

The talk about locked keys reminded me of a few years ago I stopped at a rest stop in Missouri where I came upon a lady who had left her car keys on her passenger set while she took items from her purse. When the purse was arranged she got out, locked the doors, and went inside. When she came out she remembered that her keys were on the car seat.

My friend Bob and I found her on the verge of tears wondering what to do. Upon evaluating the situation we found she had left a rear window down about 1 inch. Since we were headed south for a fishing trip we had fishing rods. I placed a small treble hook on one and proceeded to fish for her keys. Since from my vantage point I couldn't see the keys so Bob stood on the other side to direct me. It wasn't easy to snag the keys and it must have taken at least 15 or 20 minutes to do so. In the interim it was amazing the number of fellow travelers who offered suggestions as to the location of much better fishing locales.

People "stay in business" because they're not actually "in business" to begin with and, more importantly, have no regard for those who are. Passed a sign today, "FRESH EGGS $1/doz"

Of course, the same people will sit around and bellyache about how all the small farmers are forced out of business "by big ag".

Did someone say they were bringing me ground cover? Because thats great..and if not, thats fine too..cant miss what I wasnt getting. lol.

Peppermint- will spread. YAY. How about lemon balm and does anyone have lillies of the valley that they want to donate to my yard?

Lots of plants will spread, peppermint, and lemon balm for that matter, will not just spread, they will take over. You will need to be okay either with controlling it, or only having mint in your garden eventually, otherwise I would not grow it. Another option is to grow them in containers, which is what I do.

Alright, Mom, I am most likely (there is a chance I don't go,) headed to Howell / Brighton this weekend. How far away is that from you? I can bring along some groundcovers. I have moss, pachysandra, wild geraniums, sedum, phlox, and lily of the valley. I only have the larger sedum able to be split right now, I have 4 or 5 varieties of miniature sedums that are not established enough to be split yet, maybe next year! They are my favourite. I can also bring milkweed and hosta if you would like them. I may be able to find some more Lamiastrum, which is a variegated vine, but know that it is invasive. I just dug up what I could find easily and moved it to baskets. Let me know how far you are from there and which of these you would like, (aside from the moss and milkweed I know you want,) and I will see if we can work something out. I may be able to meet you part way, how far depends on what I can convince DH of.

Juise is giving Nova an Elephant named Sandra, but I didn't see any offer of ground cover... maybe I missed it.

Also anyone going to cs want some Jerusalem Artichokes? If so I'll also dig some of them up.

Me, me, me!!

Juise: If you haven't tried them yet, I highly recommend Hyland's Teething Tablets (or their teething gel).

Thanks Glad, I have seen those and heard good things about them, but we do not consume dairy products. We do have Camilia teething drops, like the ones you linked, and they do help to an extent. :)

Hmm, I don't think where you are born decides your nationality, otherwise my brother would be Chinese.

Lol, sorry, I thought I had heard you declare yourself English.

P.S. Nova - Let me know if you want some of any of the plants I listed for Mom2, too.

I'm glad then I'm not selling 'scovies in Michigan. We are getting $30 for drakes (the big ones), $15 for hens, and $8 for ducklings. We have a big Asian population here and they love the Muscovies (live, so we don't even have to process them!).
Its Asian guys who want them here too. BUT they've discovered the cheapness of the dutch and do not like to pay high prices. LOL. BUT, I will keep that in mind... AND they will process them themselves. Sweet bit there.

Well Juise, What time would be good to invade your space? I am looking forward to a visit and some plants.

I almost picked up some lemon balm today just to make tea with. LOL. I like tea, especially when its an interesting tea. I don't mind liptons variety of flavors, but I really like of the wall herbal teas that you will only find if you make them yourself, or get lucky enough to have a seller nearby that already has the herbs dried and ready to go.

I have a few more pullets laying. Up to 10 eggs a day now. Not much longer and I should be at 18.. I figure my black mama cochins should start laying again soon. Leila has already started, had laid 4 eggs in the last week. Pretty good for a silkie. I am keeping an eye on that little stinker though. Last time, she laid for 2 weeks and went broody again. WE ARE NOT ALLOWING THAT! Not until she is a solid pound again. Yup, she's less than a pound.

Opa, Maybe you should have the reporter send you a list of questions, and write the article yourself, and she can edit. Take some pictures of coop set ups, and chickens... AND send her on over to RaZ's so she can get another perspective of the hobby chicken keeper.

Picture time... Roger's head...
BIG improvement over this..

Silkie babies

U.B. Aka Ugly Boy

AND, What do ya'll think he is? I am thinking a Marans cockerel x? Note, he just saw Roger coming as I was taking it, so he was starting to run like hell!

ok... Time to go make some grub.

You guys sure make me feel self conscious when I post and everyone stops talking...

Anyway, thought I would share what I just finished cleaning up, just in case anyone thought they missed having little kids. I know I should never go to the bathroom, but sometimes I just can't help it!
