How exciting for your friend! Does she already have chickens, or is the the begining of a new life for her, lol?

She doesn't have any, but she lives on an old farm(now now-working) that had an old chicken coop. Her hubby fixed it up for her and she thinks she just want a few chickens for eggs

I remember when I thought that. I am giving her 4 to start her off. I know she will have more.

Chicks are like watched pots. Just go outside and get busy then when you come back in you'll be surprized.

Today looks as if it will be the last reasonable day we have for awhile. April cold and snow is certainly no surprize but it never is acceptable. Each year it seems that winters become longer and this one is no exception.

DCM have you any word if our prayers were answered?

Good Morning You Enablers. I couldn't stand it after all this chick talk. I broke down and got the 'el cheapo incubator out and set 6 little eggs in there. 3 Seramas and 3 Dutch. Hatch rate hasn't been good in the past, but I've got a reliable thermometer in there now. Guess we'll see what happens.

With the foul weather we have in store perhaps we can widen the gap between us and the other states. Oklahoma has narrowed to within 368 posts. If nice weather ever gets here it will be much harder to stay ahead.

My pair from you are doing great! The male (we have named him Duke, for John W.) got his hind end kicked at first. I put the pair in a flight cage in the main run and took them inside at night. After a few days, when it seemed the big girls were used to them, I opened one door emough for them to come out or in, but not the big girls. I came back to find him bravely protecting Maureen (the pullet), standing over her, even though a big girl had stuck her naughty head in and plucked his tail down to 2 feathers... I felt terrible! I now have the run seperated (and another coop) so they have thier own section... not going to take a chance - my big girls are really bratty. I put in two 10 week old pullets with him and his mate. He is being very good to all three girls.

Funny story, first one of my serama's went broody, then another. I use a metal rabbit box in their coop, because we bought a shed mid winter and pulled it in, dropped it off the trailer, nailed them a roost and stuck the rabbit nest box in and we were done. So it is a medium sized rabbit nest box, not one for big bunnies. Works well. So the two hens were sitting in there all comfy. One night I went to close up the coop and there were 3 hens, I thought, ok, another is going broody. I am not sure if she is, or just likes the warmth, since she don't sit all day. Now at night, all the hens are piling in the nest box!! OK, that is FIVE SERAMA'S AND 1 SILKIE!!

You can't even see them all in there, they are sitting on top of each other, it is crazy!! Here is a pic of them last night! Can you pick out six birds? I should mention, 5 are black or mottled, 1 is cream, and the silkie is blue splash, obviously and belongs to one of my 4-H kids. I did not plan on hatching any of her eggs, but I think she snuck some in that nest box!!

I'm still here. Checking on other posts. Don't drink coffee...prefer my homemade cider warmed up. I have to ration it though...don't want to run out before the fall! I decided I need to make more than 24 gallons...Now I need to find more apples, the best were Cortland apples, off the neighbors tree.

I am going to crack open the remaining 10 eggs that did not hatch. I am curious to see what was fertile and what wasn't. My daughter is NOT interested, but I want to know!

They are purebred eggs. Rachel wants to incubate more eggs, but I want to know why they didn't hatch before we do another batch.

All the eggs hatched on the left side of the bator....we just have the TSC variety.
So not sure if there was major temp differences?

Need to get to work.....this place is addicting:)
