Ok we cracked open the eggs. Very proud of DD, she doesn't like this sort of thing either.

Out of the 10 lavender ameraucana eggs:

4- not fertile

2- embryo's who died fairly young

4- fully developed chicks with a jelly bean size or so of yolk left. All were dead. Looks like one or two had pooped or something.

Any thoughts as to why the 4 died?

When I left the house, 1 chick had hatched and anouther looked like it was about to start zipping (Was already pipped) and the third egg hasn't done much. The chick that hatched has a huge top knott on its head, which is a sign as a breeder that im doing something right

she/hes will be cuter after shes (

) dried, i'll get pictures when she is. Im hoping to be surprised when I get home and they'll be all hatched. I originaly started with 3 eggs, and they were all fertile and moving around in the egg the last time I candled (Which was day 14).

Cat, maybe you should be 'Making Pork Rinds' or 'Clarifying Fat'.

Well, I didn't think my day could possibly get any worse...but it just did.

Since today is day 21 for my Delawares and 1 hatched yesterday but none of the others have pipped, I figured something was wrong. I know, I know...don't open the 'bator, but I just had a gut feeling that it wasn't going to matter anyway. I pulled 6 eggs out only to find that the chicks had drowned. It seems my humidity gauge decided to malfunction between hatches and I didn't realize it.

I took it out, and it will register a lower humidity, but won't go higher than 62%. Chalk that up to a hard lesson learned. I just didn't need this heartbreak today, too.

There was 1 egg, though, that had a live peep inside. I put a tiny hole in the air cell to make sure there wasn't any excess water in the egg...there wasn't. I covered the hole with a damp paper towel and put it back in the bator. I've had to do this "hole procedure" before and had good luck, so hopefully I will this time too.

I talked to my little cowgirls momma today and they didn't do much of anything at the ER. She was taking her to the regular dr. today at 11am to see what they could do for her. She said she is even worse than yesterday. She is very swollen everywhere and every place she had a hive red spot has turned into a black and blue mark. Poor baby, thanks for all the prayers.

Shelley- sorry to hear about the lay off, it will all work out. Sorry to hear about the hatch too.

Ok my creative friends, how about a title for me? I can't think of a thing!

Gotta sign off in case cowgirls mom calls TTFN

DCM- That sounds strange that the ER couldn't do anything for her?!? Isn't that what they are there for is to help someone who is sick? Our medical system seems to be failing us!

Michelle- sorry about your loss with the chicks. How did you know they drowned? Didn't know that could happen.

DCM- chicken and kid wrangler?

Finally, cowgirls mom called, the dr. gave her a steroid shot and some other meds to help with the reaction. Dr. couldn't believe that the ER didn't give her the shot. Her face is so swollen she can barely open her eyes. She is more content than she has been so that is good. Thank the Lord she is improving!

Going out to take pics of my chicks before they go to their new homes!

Ok... All 3 bathrooms are cleaned, rugs are still drying though. One of my least favorite jobs in house cleaning.

Now time to figure out dinner....thinking of spagetti, especially since it is 4:30.

Have a great evening everyone!

Sarah
