Came back and it's got one of the pieces in its mouth and while the chicken piece seems too big for it, is doing a pretty good job of shredding it with its feet (and not, for a second, letting it out of its mouth even when it has to come up to breathe).

Ugh, I just hope that my missing ducks are sitting on nests and not in the stomach of its mother.

Thanks for the ID.
My turtle does a pretty good job of shreading his food too... makes for a messy tank

definitely a snapper.
They stay real shallow until they are bigger and rarely ever come out of the water. Once big, they will only come out to lay eggs...

now that said...you only found ONE..they lay many more eggs than that.
Ave. 25 to 80 eggs per year.

Ugh, I know. I'm looking to see if there's any way to get rid of them without actually killing anything else I have around. Searching for pest control and snapping turtles doesn't seem to have the same number of hits as searching for pest control and rats/coons/etc. That stuff I can deal with, I have NO idea how to get rid of snappers.

Hrm, this does not bode well then. While his nose isn't hooked it is pretty pointy.

I'm missing 2 ducks. Well I was missing 2 ducks Saturday night after dark but then one turned up all day Sunday but they're both nowhere to be seen now. I have no idea if they've just decided to set on their hidden nest or if something got them. The presence of a snapping turtle baby makes me doubt a hidden nest (though the scovies are extremely secretive about everything it seems.)

Anyone want a snapping turtle baby? Are they good eating? After how long?
They are excellent fare but not until they are about 20 years old

Today's mail brought two bantam eggs that through the art of pysanky they were transformed by Glambka in works of art. Absolutely beautiful.
