On another note, we have this almost 100 degree weather coming up. My DIL was over last night and we were talking and she is seriously talking about taking Chimi in the house in the air conditioning when we have that hot weather. And she also re-named him. His name is Huey ( after Baby Huey) lol.

He'll forever be Chimi to me. LOL! It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep him in on those days. Especially if he is as... eh hem ... stout as he looks in the pictures. As much low impact exercise and limit his feed if they want him to have any hope of lasting. The more they make him forage for his feed the better. I wouldn't feed him at all spring through fall.

Aric and I were talking about chickenstock last night and were wondering why it isn't twice a year. Plus we thought of an idea. Why not one, advertise on craigslist and two, make up a flyer and email it to people in different sides of the state and we can all contribute in posting them. For example, we go to different places to buy feed and almost all of them have bulletin boards. I'm also all for Jrsckn's ideas!

I let my boy pick the raffle prize. He picked the stuffed chicken toy. He puts that thing in his bike helmet, straps it in, sets it on his sled full of rocks and what not, drags it through the trees, and last night, took it to bed. OMG! He had it sitting on the steering wheel to my mower, and I thought at first there was a chicken there...

I think a buying a ticket for the raffle is a good idea. Even though the items are donated, I think it would be good for covering the cost of the pavilion. I am looking forward to going next year. At least I will know where I am going and not take the exit to early and end up on the wrong side of town... At least I ended up on the wrong side of town but on the right highway!
I have one of those stuffed chickens just like that one and she rides everywhere in my car that I go

I call her Matilda.

I have a weird question, and maybe Olive or Opa might be the one to have an answer... Maybe not, but, a cross beak chicken pondering... Since a lot of factory chicken farms, well some, debeak their layers, and some of those hens that have been moved on to retirement homes and have grown their beaks back... would it be safe to assume that you could debeak a cross beak and possibly have it grow back in straight? OR, will it grow back in crossed anyway?

LOL. Raz!

.... I've been wondering when Seb, would break wind on you!

I'm going on one of my first long distance bike trips (riding my own bike) in July. Not that far really, we're going to see Mammoth caves in Kentucky. I'm looking forward to it - just hope the weather is nice!
He hit me square in the chest.

I'm sure it was funny to see. Thankfully the odour doesn't bother me, but it was still unpleasant.

I'm jealous of your trip. I love riding through KY, TN, NC and such. I need a good long trip somewhere.

Nova - From what I've seen it seems the deformity that causes the cross is usually not in the beak itself, but further up where it comes out of/is attached to the skull. Kind of like people who are pigeon toed rarely are so because their feet turn in, it's because they have a "twist" in their legs or hips. For that reason I'd wager that if it grew back it would still be crossed. Never done it, so no experience... but that'd be my educated guess and the reason behind it.

I will also say that I see no reason to try to fix or adjust a crossed beak. Birds with even a severe case of the condition can usually cope just fine if you provide them a deep feed pan so they can scoop the feed with the lower portion of the beak. Since they're able to survive and, in most cases, even thrive, any fix would be cosmetic and I can't see any good coming from cosmetic procedures on animals.

Hi, that's not far at all! Thanks, I'm very happy to have found this site and the MI thread, even though it's a full time job trying to keep up lol.

I also think a twice a year event is a good idea. We could also do a 50/50 raffle to help cover expenses. Or even sell raffle tickets to the goodie table or maybe do a chicken raffle where chickens are donated and raffle tickets are purchased to win chickens; who wouldn't love that?. We do 50/50 and prize raffles at the dog shows I attend and a decent amount of money is raised.
Twice a year is a great idea. But what about a more northern location? Lansing is so far south. What about a location more accessible to the northern folks?

That is so sweet! Kids can be so great, sometimes it almost makes we wish I'd had one.... almost.

I read this to DH and nearly spit out his coffee he thought it was so funny! At least it wasn't an Uggo.

Can someone tell me who coined the name Uggo? DH seems to have a need to know.

Are you sure ? lol I'll tell you one thing though. I know what you brought me, I seen them before we put them in the cage, and guess what ? While they were in the cage we put them in 4 turned into 5 !!!! Somebody put a young black rooster ( half grown) in with them ! No clue who put it there, no clue what kind it is, or nothing. When we opened the cage 5 came out and I know it is NOT an Andalusion.
I don't know why it came out empty. But I know what I tried to quote. I hope you win Raz and I hope they don't limit it to just 3 hens. What the heck is their reasoning for that? Bureaucrats!

I'm with 1mutts. A 50-50 would be a great thing to do to help with the rental (which for some reason I had no idea the pavilion cost money, what was I thinking?

) Just goes to show ya having a college degree doesn't guarantee common sense. But NO BIRDS in the raffle. uhuh, me neither.

I love 50:50 raffles. But I will NOT buy raffle tickets for a drawing of which a prize is live chickens! No more chickens, accidental or not!
EXCELLENT idea! Being one of us northerners mid August would be a great time of the year, you southerners could escape the worst of the heat, we could sleep a little later. Now I would love to have it way up here in Barton City, we have 2 pavilions and a lake within walking distance, but I am quite willing to compromise, say Clare or Mt Pleasant? Much more centrally located LP-wise and according to mapquest about 83 minutes from Lansing to Clare, less to Mt Pleasant. Just and idea, I'm sure someone on here knows more about that part of the state than me. I just asked DH (MI native) and looked at a map.
