Oh man, this is surprisingly common. I had a very intelligent, well-educated, and clear-thinking neighbor who could not get herself to eat any of the vegetables that grew underground in her garden (carrots, potatoes, etc.) She knew it made no sense, and that the vegetables she bought at the store were grown the same way, but she just could not pull something out of the ground and eat it.

And my mom, a very intelligent woman with good common sense, and who buys her eggs from a local farmer, won't eat fertilized eggs because it icks her out to think she's might eat a chick fetus, or that she might crack open a fertilized egg one day and find a partially-developed dead chick in it.

You caught that part about my mom buying eggs from a local farmer? Those eggs are likely fertilized, but my mom hasn't thought about that.
Oh yeah! This same girl...won't eat any of our eggs either. She's under the impression that they're "brighter" because of the chemicals we give our animals in their feed. SERIOUSLY? I mean, I know a lot of med students are crazy, often thinking they have the diseases they study, etc. But this girl is just...weird. Beyond weird! She insists the only place she can go to college is in Hawaii..and that her parents pay for it because that's what parents are supposed to do!! She comes home a few times a year and insists that her parents buy her the ultra expensive organic food at a store because it's "carefully examined". HAHAHA. This girl both infuriates me and cracks me up.

I give Tom both thumbs up for putting up with his family...and us lol. He seriously tells me that the noise my animals put out is nothing compared to what he has IN his house!! LOL

How weird! Just this morning I saw a report how this drought is bringing out animals and bugs that we ordinarily don't see on a regular basis.

I remember as a kid I LOVED bugs. My friends thought it wasn't right because I was a girl. I would pick up all sorts of bugs and hide them under my bed in canning jars I'd take from my grandma. Boy would that anger my mom! LOL.

So last night while watering flowers, Aric came up to me with this in his hand. I got SO excited because as a kid my two favorites were praying mantises and stick insects. Being the photographer I am I spent a good hour taking photos of this guy!!

The drawback is my expensive camera didn't come with a decent macro lens so all Aric heard was "I need a better lens" lol But I got a few somewhat decent shots at least which made my day!

OK...as hokey as this video is (my husband filmed for me) ...here is blowing out an egg using a Blas-fix. Really EASY.
Well now isn't that super snazzy! I'll have to find a video of our boys blowing out eggs...with their mouths. It's so funny. They'll be ticked when they see there is an actual tool.

I thought it was well done!
Yes... where does one get a squeezie thing?
I always poke 2 holes... top and bottom. Then BLOW... to think there is a much easier way!!!

While watching your video I found this!!
Fake eggs huh? I can't even imagine.

I have the first ever rump-less GLW!

Wow, what an ordeal! I'm glad everyone is okay though!

Here is an interesting blog by a canadian guy who calls himself Mike the Chicken Vet

http://mikethechickenvet.wordpress.com/tag/backyard-chickens/
I saved this and will read up on it later.

When I fed my birds tonight Mrs Duck ran out of the coop to eat, I checked inside hoping to find my first chicken egg of the year (no luck) and saw a broken duck egg. Since she decided to have her nest next to the pop door I figured it was inevitable that someone would step in the nest and crush an egg or two. So I picked it up to throw it out and discovered the birdie inside was breathing and had little wet yellow feathers. Apparently, it was pipped and zipped. I never did remember to write down when she started setting, I guess it was longer ago than I thought.

Hi today was 96.4. At least it didn't hit the 102 prediction!
Awww!

Well, Mike the vet was a very interesting read. We need more vets like that around.

I plucked Mr. Fluffers off the roost. I looked him over. I can not tell if he's lost feathers to the fight, he is molting, pathetic thing. No beard, no leg feathers, nearly naked neck under those hackles... I did find broke off feathers though. Seems like he's just a bit bruised up, and his left wing is a bit wonky. Not broken, but banged up. I believe he'll be fine. He was able to get up on the roost, and it is 5 feet up. What a good boy.

I talked to the neighbor. She agrees that its probably a juvie coon. I am setting the live trap with the carcass of Big Boy. Hope that tempts what ever it was. I really don't think it was a fox or a neighbors dog. There are no punctures on any one of the injured birds. Just a lot of missing feathers. Earlene said she'd relay to Carl to take a look see in the trap in the morning. He shoots, I bury. Yup.

My hand is looking good. It has finally stopped bleeding randomly. No redness/inflamation. The stitches look nice. The stitches were only put into the deepest part, the rest was just left bandaged until it scabbed. It aches a bit, but otherwise, eh... I am just happy that it'll only take a little bandage now over the part closest to my wrist while I do anything. Other than that, once I took the bandage off today, I've left it open to the air. Appreciate the well wishes.

Has anyone seen hide or hair of Juise?
Your hand looks looks like it's healing great!

Again, not too much happening here. We are getting an egg every single day from Cuddles so far. No other layers yet, we are at 18 weeks. Sooooooon though!

I have 8 infertile pheasant eggs if anyone wants em for crafty type stuff. PM me if u want em... my phone has been possessed by demons and does weird flashy things, so no calls or texts.... grrrrrr!!!!

Hope everyone has a great day.... off to At&t so see about a new phone!!!

Same here, the stupid camera kept focusing on the pine needles so I couldn't get a good pic of this guy I found Friday

I haven't done any old hens yet. I haven't had any get old yet. My oldest hens are a year and a half. I did meat birds though. I also do have my extra cockerels processed. Especially now since most they are all related... And that just doesn't work for the breeding factor. BUT, when my hens get too old to lay, they'll probably just hang out, keep them younguns in line. LOL.
I'm not sure what I'll do, I think it might be hard to eat them, but I can't keep them as pets because we don't have the room. Any chicken we get will be a combo meat/egg type bird, so that wouldn't be an issue, just the attachment would...but then I kind of think...I would rather us eat her then re-home her to get eaten by someone else! lol! Maybe we will be on our bigger homestead that we are hoping for before I have to worry about that. :) The ducks will probably stay as pets because the kids are rather attached to them, but if they have babies (no idea on sex yet) they will either be rehomed, or named dinner simply because we don't have the room to keep more...I'm not super concerned about it right now....just wondering what everyone else did and if it would be taboo to be asking about it! lol!

Mrshaggie - yes lots of folks on here eat their ducks and chickens too. No one is offended by any questions you would have.

:) Good! That is what I was worried about.

Quiet this morning. Sitting here waiting for daylight and contemplating how wonderful it is to be able to face another day.
Amen

Ugh! My MIL is a nurse and I run into the same type issues with her all the time!

I have seriously considered going to med school on more than one occasion, but I don't know that I could handle being around those kind of people!

Praying mantises are awesome! My favorite from when I was little are Katydid's...it was actually supposed to be my daughter's nick name but it never really stuck,...my son is so funny though...he loves insects too, and one day he came out of his bedroom carrying something, and he said he wanted to show me it....I asked him what it was... "My squished bug collection Mama." lol!

I have several names. My legal American name is Katherine but my Irish name is Keyt which is pronounced Kate. Growing up I was Katie and EVERYONE called me Katydid...and they sang the k-k-k-katie song to me all the time. My son went to the same middle school I did. My counselor from those days was the assistant principal by the time he got there. She went up to him one day and started singing that song and he thought she was crazy. When he came home and told me about it I said "Oh, you must have met Mrs. B!" lol

How odd about all the weird medical worrying. I know a ton about germs, i have a fascination with studying them. I am backwards, though, since i would rather eat the germs and get stronger! lol. At least my germs from my own garden and hens, not so much the ones from places i don't know.
