When I fed my birds tonight Mrs Duck ran out of the coop to eat, I checked inside hoping to find my first chicken egg of the year (no luck) and saw a broken duck egg. Since she decided to have her nest next to the pop door I figured it was inevitable that someone would step in the nest and crush an egg or two. So I picked it up to throw it out and discovered the birdie inside was breathing and had little wet yellow feathers. Apparently, it was pipped and zipped. I never did remember to write down when she started setting, I guess it was longer ago than I thought.

Hi today was 96.4. At least it didn't hit the 102 prediction!

Well, Mike the vet was a very interesting read. We need more vets like that around.

I plucked Mr. Fluffers off the roost. I looked him over. I can not tell if he's lost feathers to the fight, he is molting, pathetic thing. No beard, no leg feathers, nearly naked neck under those hackles... I did find broke off feathers though. Seems like he's just a bit bruised up, and his left wing is a bit wonky. Not broken, but banged up. I believe he'll be fine. He was able to get up on the roost, and it is 5 feet up. What a good boy.

I talked to the neighbor. She agrees that its probably a juvie coon. I am setting the live trap with the carcass of Big Boy. Hope that tempts what ever it was. I really don't think it was a fox or a neighbors dog. There are no punctures on any one of the injured birds. Just a lot of missing feathers. Earlene said she'd relay to Carl to take a look see in the trap in the morning. He shoots, I bury. Yup.

My hand is looking good. It has finally stopped bleeding randomly. No redness/inflamation. The stitches look nice. The stitches were only put into the deepest part, the rest was just left bandaged until it scabbed. It aches a bit, but otherwise, eh... I am just happy that it'll only take a little bandage now over the part closest to my wrist while I do anything. Other than that, once I took the bandage off today, I've left it open to the air. Appreciate the well wishes.

Has anyone seen hide or hair of Juise?

Yikes HOT! We got up there today too. If it weren't for the wind, it'd have been unbearable. Even the chickens didn't seem to phased by todays heat. Sounds like storm coming in though.

So, is the little guy ok then?

I tell everyone I'm 73, then they all say, "Wow! You look great". Better than telling them I'm younger and having them snicker behind my back and say, "She's just falling apart".

(Happy 21st!)

OK...as hokey as this video is (my husband filmed for me) ...here is blowing out an egg using a Blas-fix. Really EASY.

Awesome! Thank for sharing!

Crazy! That's neat though! Is the little one ok?

Nova: Sorry about the critter...glad everyone is ok! :)

Are there people on BYC who keep chickens and ducks for meat and eggs...I have questions about that kind of stuff but it seems everyone has them as pets. Our duckies will be pets...but what do you do with your laying hens once they get old and don't lay anymore? I mean, my first thought is...mmm, chicken and dumplings...but then I think...could I eat a lovely little lady that I named and got to know for several years? Do I just always think of her as food? I am still really new to all this. lol.

I haven't done any old hens yet. I haven't had any get old yet. My oldest hens are a year and a half. I did meat birds though. I also do have my extra cockerels processed. Especially now since most they are all related... And that just doesn't work for the breeding factor. BUT, when my hens get too old to lay, they'll probably just hang out, keep them younguns in line. LOL.

I never eat my birds. Some people do and others don't. I don't have mine for eating, eggs, or pets. I have mine because I like them LOL. I like the look of the dark marans eggs plus I like to just watch my birds. Although, now that I think of it, I do have a couple that are pets hahahaha
