That is really cool! There are 4 robin eggs in the nest outside my neighbors front door where I exercise. I am hoping they are not frozen this morning though!!!

Enjoy the wildlife!

Honestly, I really think there is a better way to say that I should switch their food than to tell me I'm messing them up big time. That was not very nice.

It's funny how things can be interpreted by the written/typed word. I read that post and didn't think there was a thing wrong with it. She was in her way being helpful.

Just remember no one is on here to be mean, and sometimes when reading information on a forum you need to keep that in mind.

I hope I didn't just sound not nice....just helpful.

I was a little hurt/offended. I love my chickens. I would never do anything to intentionally hurt them. I have the light on 24/7 right now because my husband built me the new hen house -my avatar- and he hasn't been able to put a window in yet. I know chickens are completely blind in the dark and I didn't want them getting hurt with it being pitch black in there.

Good Morning Everyone!!!

It was 31 degrees this morning:( Cannot wait for the warm weather.

Easter we are going to Jon's Aunt and Uncle's house. We are in charge of bringing rolls...so that is all the menu that I know...the rest is a surprise:D

Gretchen had a great birthday. I was exhausted and had a hard time getting up this morning.

off to get breakfast going.

Do you have vent holes? I would think you might have some light coming in that way. One of my coops is pretty dark, but I have never had an issue. I let them get settled in at night before I shut the doors and just open them up at sun up. I think it really would be better to let them have dark time.

We are all here to learn the best way to care for our feathered friends. (and enjoy chatting:) I have gone to a few workshops at MSU for poultry. I really learned a lot and found out I was doing some things wrong. (biggest one had killed half of my daughters laying hens!) I will have to get the name of the poultry book my daughter has. It is a wealth of information.

Smile:D

Yup, we have all learned the hard way, but, I think far less the hard way because of all the good help on here! I think we are all pretty upfront and honest on here, but never unkind. I appreciate that.

I do have an area that vents the coop, it's where you would find sophets. I just worry that that is not enough for them to see by if they happen to get off their roost. I can turn off the lights when I tuck them in at night and perhaps I will try that tonight and Friday and see how it goes. Thank you for your input

I had a terrific book that was my bible when I raised ducks "Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks". Perhaps I should get that one for chickens...

You might want to think about turning the lights off a few minutes before you close up the coop... that way they will still have some light to find their roosting spot and not be caught off guard by lights suddenly going off... I wouldn't even worry about lights being on at all, till winter, if you want to lengthen the day a bit for eggs.
