Miss_Jayne, I have seen his ads and almost drove up there last spring. I would have walked away rather than buy birds in that type of confinement and condition. I still would have been rather upset with wasting both time and gas. Your warning post hopefully will keep new BYCers from buying sick birds and us "Old Roosters" from having to endure unnecessary stress. Thanks.

you are welcome, Opa! he has it set up so you cannot see everything for yourself, it's a long story, hard to put all in words.

i don't want to mess with any 'Old Roosters', they wont share recipes with you then!

There is always a bad apple in a bushel...and this guy is the one.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully he won't be at the swap tomorrow.

I am cold...we haven't started up the wood burner yet. Pointless this time of year. When it warms up the house is too hot then.
Our 'fire breathing dragon' is outside. We heat with the hot water it warms. All of our floors are heated this way too. So if it is over 50* then the house is too hot.
So we wear sweatshirts and socks:)

Off to get dinner ready and prepare for 4-H tonight.

Sarah

I agree it is getting very cold. We had to dig out extra blankets for the beds last night and find our slippers this morning. I even started to crochet again!
On the other hand, I took the fence down around the garden and the chickens are loving it, bugs, greens and yucky tomatoes, its chicken heaven. I guess thats one good thing about cooler weather.

I was going to type out all the information about the butter pecan cake, then decided to look it up on line. I found the exact same recipe my mother used at Tasteofhome.com
Type butter pecan cake in their seach and you will get the same cake and be able to print it out in a variety of recipe formats. That way I don't have to type it out and you don't have to copy it. Us "Old Roosters" still like doing everything we just try to find the easiest way to do it. Next week I am going to have a plastic igloo shaped dog house to give away. It would make an awesome duck house once you place it on a float. They sell for over $100 at TSC. It came with a dog kennel I bought, so anyone that wants it can have it.

We heat with corn. It works on the same principal. Burn the corn to heat the water, water circulates through a heat exchanger over the blower in the furnace, blower blows hot air. We just put up 360 bushels of corn about two weeks ago which should last the winter. We only keep the thermostat at 65. But I just can't make myself turn the heat on before November.

The cool thing is we have a separate heat exchanger for the hot water supply. It supplements the heat added to the water by the water heater and keeps the heating elements off most of the time.

Edited to add: Did anybody go to the swap at the Shiawassee fairgrounds today? It was small but still fun.

Spicers is on US-23 north of Hartland a couple miles. They are a little pricey in my opinion. But have very good apples.

There are Runkel apples in Fowlerville. Great all around apple. It is a variety developed by Mr. Runkel (deceased, his daughter runs it now).

We have been making apple cider the last 2 days. 10 gallons yesterday (plus what was drank) Today is not as much, 1.25 gallons in the canner right now. Probably just as much heating up to be pasterized. Not bad for using some different neighbors apples for free. They were both done with what they wanted to use. I took them both some cider last night, they were pleased that they didn't have to do any work for some awesome cider!

After dinner, which is almost ready, we are going back down to one of the neighbors and press grapes for grape juice. More steps than the cider and takes two days. So we will see how it turns out.

The mostiquoes are terrible at our place!!!!
