[Opa]

Well I think that winter is not far away. Went to check the chickens this morning and found the 1/4 inch tube that supplies my hanging waterer was frozen. Time to bring it inside. Maybe it's an age thing but winter seems to come earlier and stay longer. I'm sure not looking forward to winter.

This is the worst part!! Hauling water, UGH!! Someday we will get that line put in out to the barn.

I have water in the barn but my first year the water froze up because I didn't latch it down all the way. Sooo I know where you are coming from. I now check and double check that the latch is all the way down. Been there and done that and DON'T want to do it again.

I was just out in my garden, pulling a few plants. My hens now have free range of the garden in addition to their run. As soon as I got in there, the speckled sussex that I bought at Fowl Fest immediately came over and followed me around like dogs. They sure are beautiful birds. My question is does anyone have the name of the little girl that was selling Sussex pullets at Fowl Fest. I would like to drop her a note complimenting her on raising such fantastic birds and to make arrangements to buy some more from her next spring.

We had a hard frost last night. I am hoping that the mostiques are gone for the season.

I don't mind your ladies posts. Glad to see that others are interested in gardening and preserving foods. My Grandma (passed away in Feb) and my Dad taught me how to can and freeze fruits and veggies.
This summer was bittersweet canning all by myself. Grandma would come over with peaches from her tree and we would can them. This year the tree didn't produce any peaches... probably mourning too

I got salsa, spagetti (not enough for the year), pizza sauce(not enough either), and apple cider canned. I froze green beans, brocoli, strawberries, raspberries, corn, and soon apples.

I lost my last batch of tomatoes when we got 11+ inches of rain late summer. I should of gone out and picked but I said when the rain stops and it didn't for days!

I have to can more cider, we are drinking it like crazy! But it doesn't take long with 5 kids either.

Awww Sarah

I am sorry for your loss. I was feeling very nastalgic myself canning this year. My mom, aunt, and grandma all worked together in our little kitchen canning every year...it made me miss them very much, but also very connected to them while i was working and teaching the next generation.

I have found i feel far more empowered by growing and preserving my own food than any job has ever done for me. It is so awesome.

by the way:

Does anyone know of anyone anywhere in mi that might have a wood stove to get rid of?

Hi again!!
I am used to the Carson area also. My cousin owns the Rusty Nail there. I don't get to see my side of the family that much, but she was still there the last time I saw her.
My blue chochin and 7 babies are doing just fine. She is a really good Mom.
I worked at Electrolux in Greenville . After they closed the doors we still decided to stay around the Ionia area.
We still have Rhode Island Red roosters and two bantum roosters to sell and would be willing to trade for some nice hens or silkie hens. Our birds are all nice and healty and used to getting all kinds of goodies. My husband is even starting to get interested in them more.

LOL The rusty nail in my day was called the Lamplight inn. My family and I used to stop in for dinner once in a while. Also the Bamboo Room was a favorite breakfast stop of my fathers.

I just intoduced my hubby and kids to Crystal Lake this summer. I dragged him there kicking and screaming, and now he is trying to find a seasonal camp site up there lol

Oh my gosh! My aunt worked at the Rusty Nail/ Lamplight through college, etc. The Bamboo Room my Grandma worked in while my dad was a teenager and we ate there all the time. My grandpa had pie and coffee there almost every day. I am so amazed! Anyone remember Cozy Corner in the old days?
