Opa, you sound like my DH. Although it does get hot at the factory where he works. Since I grew up in Georgia, Michigan summers seem so short and the winters too long. When it gets too hot just go swimming.

Seems like everytime it gets real hot we wind up with a job working on a house on or near a lake. We get to sweat while watching others play on the water. Of course that just another example of how life goes. When it hot alot of our jobs are indoors and when it's cold the only work coming in seems to be outdoors.

Yeah - my first day of summer. Still have to go into school though and finish packing up my classroom and 2 labs. And bring home the class guinea pigs. And finish the grades. On second thought, it really isn't close to being the end of the school year.

On a good note, I'm going to get some of Polish's beautiful blue/black cochins tomorrow!

AND I have 2 welsummers and 2 speckled sussex coming my way this week (ordered from MPC way back in March!)

I'm still waitin' on my cornish cross chicks to get here... I'm being a bit impatient, but if they are hatched too soon they'll be way too big by BCYF (the county fair).

Also still trying to find someone with black, blue & splash marans. I want them to be just old enough to go out in the tractor by the time the fair comes... it will help my younger siblings (especially the 3-yr-old) cope with getting rid of the meaties.

I've assisted with the butchering of chickens before, but never could stomach the actual killing. I'm a lot older now though, and have promised mom that I'd do the deed if the chickens don't sell at the fair.

Good morning Michigan.

hillbillyhen, glad your DH is back to work. It is good to hear that you will miss him. Some couples couldn't stand to be together 24/7 for three months and would be happy for one to go back to work.

Welcome jwchicklady. Sorry to hear your are having coon problems too. They are determined critters and will come back to a food source. If there is a way into your coop they WILL find it.

Cat so glad your hubby has 2 more weeks of work. Who knows what will happen at the end of those 2 weeks. My husbands favorite saying from the bible is "Let God guide and he will provide".

Ok, where is that sassy lady?

Morning all. Last evening I set up the sprinklers around my garden after the sun was starting to set, and fell asleep on the couch. Well I was wondering why the well pump was running... DOH!

Good news the garden isn't flooded, and my potatoes look better than ever!!!!!

Morning all, looks like it's going to be a nice sun shiny day!

One of my hens is being horribly broody. Have you ever heard of a broody hen that will leave the nest and allow other hens to lay eggs in the nest? Cus she's an easter egger but most the eggs I took out of her "nest" where brown!

I almost want to place some fertile eggs under her to see if she's actually hatch them but I know nothing about hatching.

A2SciTeach- glad to hear it's finally summer time. Which school do you teach at in Ann Arbor, I great up in Ann Arbor before moving the Detroit.

The nice thing about a broody hen is you don't have to know anything about hatching because she knows it all.

Just start checking for chicks at about 18 days to 21 and also make sure they are not too far off the floor and that you can separate them from the other hens when they are first born.

Happy hatching.

Welcome to all of you newbies and Hi to all ya regulars.

I don't have a rooster so the eggs under that where under her are not fertile. And actually I took all the eggs away so she is currently sitting on nothing at all. I'd have to put fertile eggs under her. Anyone know where I can get some?

Her nest is on the floor, in a corner, which is kind of nice, leaves the nesting box open for the other girls

Yes. I had a White Rock hen that was the best brooder I have ever seen! Even though she stopped laying eggs at about one and a half years, she hatched a dozen or more ameraucanas every year for four years after. We just lost her a couple months ago. This will be the first year she hasn't supplied us with new chicks in five years. That's kinda old for a hen isn't it?
