the eggs from MSU have good fertility rates. (i've hatched two separate batches myself and had nice results)

your part is just to check in now and then. make sure that the nests are where the chicks wont fall out of the nests, so that mom can safely take them out to explore the world.

keep us posted! how exciting!

Thanks MJ - I'm excited too - the eggs are all bantams, which is a bit of a concern for me that these youngins will be so much smaller than my standard, but all the same, I'm excited to be going thru this process! THANK you MJ for you input! The nesting boxes are about 2 ft above the floor of the coop, so I think I'll wait until after the hatching to move everyone to the lower level - and YES, I'll keep everyone posted! 20 days to go - MJ thanks SO MUCH for pointing me in the right direction with the Poultry facility at MSU - Certainly was not difficult to identify Angelo from the group on site when I went over there this afternoon!!!

Hey you all! Happy INDEPENDENCE day to everyone!
Well, my broodies are doing just GREAT! Now I hope the eggs pull thru for me! We had to make a little adjustment for the broodies! EVERYONE else wanted to jump in their nesting boxes, lay an egg, sit on the bantie eggs and then leave! We were working outside the coop on Saturday and it was torture for me to listen to those poor broodies trying to defend their "position" on the eggs! So, we hauled out a dog crate - put a piece of cardboard in the middle and now the broodies have a wonderful place to sit on their eggs all by their lonesome! Now mind you, the other gals are poking their little heads thru the bars pulling hay out! Whatever they can do to be a "part" of this new experience!

From what I've read, bantie eggs mature in 19 days and all other chicken eggs mature in 21 days - am I right on target here - will try to get a picture of our broodies and post if anyone is interested! of course it's all about our broodies these days!

I'd like to have bantams again... sigh... no room.

The cornish will be three weeks old tomorrow. Something busted through the fencing of the tractor last night which makes me glad that they were in the coop part locked up tight. Anyway, I didn't let them down into the tractor this morning because I had to rush off to work without fixing the fencing. I'm glad they have windows in the coop because it was H O T when I got back home. The poor things had drank a full gallon of water and were laying around panting. I let them down into the tractor immediately and they wer SOOOOOO thirsty they fought for placement around the waterer. Poor little things. I'm glad they all survived.

Good afternoon. I just got off the phone with the place that is gonna process the chickens and turkeys. Has anyone ever gone to Kodelman's in Ottawa Lake? They are going in July 19th. I am looking forward to my pullets having some peace. They are on a starter/ grower but it is medicated. Should I go back to non-medicated?

medicated feed is used for building an immunity to cocci. it is only beneficial for chicks. i don't think it will be harmful in anyway though.

any meds used are supposed to be stopped five days prior to butchering i believe. (you'll wanna double check me on that, as i don't use them unless it is an absolute last resort emergency, plus i am old and full of termites so i forget things!

I have some Rouen x Khaki cross eggs right now. I don't have a khaki drake yet so these are just mutts or "designer" ducks as MJ calls them

Michigan "lurkers" reporting. Had a wonderful visit with Miss_Jayne this AM/PM. Quite the lady! Told us of the possum incident and the big pearly whites. The story, the pictures - what a laugh! Anyhow, had a great visit. She is so full of life and information. Unbeknownst to us the Lord had more than a mere visit in store for us today - aside from meeting MJ and her husband Rick and their poultry - we acquired three more chickies and to think that prior to the visit we were sure, well pretty sure, well kinda sure, that we were not getting anymore chickens until next spring and certainly no bantams. Well, here we are richer by three bantams. As if that were not enough, MJ gave us the business card of her feed supplier. Then home where the chickies roam and a slug of a beagle just lays by worrying the newbies as if he'd never seen a chick in all his born days. That dog just ain't right. Anyhow, great time and can't wait to do it again. Thanks MJ!

we just loved getting to meet both of you! (Elizabeth and me! Elizabeth goes by chickensnatcher here on BYC by the way!)

we sure hope you come back soon and for a 'real' visit with chairs and eating and whatnot! we love to kick back and sit for awhile when we aren't building hoop houses or scrubbing waterers!
