Our chickens are funny in the snow. The deeper it is the less they like to walk in it...so they fly and make a terrible squaking noise.

We shovel a few paths so they can walk around outside the pen. They love to peck at the grass in the winter too!

It is raining and colder out....hopefully we will get another warm spell!

My daughter and I are going to be standing outside of Vg's today. Fundraising for our trip to Honduras. Hopefully people will feel sorry for us and donate!

My MIL's farm is full of antiques ( and stuff, that era didn't throw much out:) We just have to sort through everything still since her passing. It is fun going to a mueseum and the kids seeing something that they play with down there!

Off to get ready. Have a great day today everyone.

WHooboy are my girls mad at the snow falling!!

I opened their run so they can free range and they have yet to pop outside. They are in their covered run complaining their little hearts out! I dont have the heart to tell them it has only just begun!

mine all thought it was like the winter olympics yesterday. let's see who can jump the fence first. who can flap the longest.

they are digging it. we'll see how long that lasts.

on second thought, it might be because i spread seed wheat along the ground for them to scratch into the soil in bare spots....

the only two seriously sticking in the little coop are Sister Mary Agnes and Jane with No Last Name. one is IN the nesting box. the other (Sis M.A.) has moved the nest box over creating a corner behind it and is laying back there!
their beloved Rex is watching over both. i swear he is coaching them through it.

push it out, shove it out, waaaaay out!

No way are mine EVER going to lay. Why should they work for a living when they are treated like queens.. They knock at the sliding door and my husband runs to feed them treats! They have him very well trained!

I too was being to think that my hens had decided that their sole purpose in life was to watch me working my tail off taking care of them; but finally several have started laying and soon the price these eggs may actually start costing less than $100 a dozen. The eggs were getting from the Welsummers are almost to pretty to eat. Butchered 4 welsummer roosters today. Sure is less than enjoyable to kill something so beautiful, but once I start eating them I'm sure my remorse will completely disappear.

Getting kinda cold to be butchering roosters?!? I don't like messing with processing birds anyways. I LOVE Fowlerville Poultry Processing! It is well worth $2 a bird, which we only have the meat chickens to be butchered. It wouldn't be worth the price of gas to take a few roos up anyways.

Glad that you got some more meat for your freezer. Hopefully your chickens will start laying so your price will go down for eggs....you probably could get that price in Hollywood!

My daughter's egg business is picking up and hopefully the chickens can keep up!

Enjoy the snow!

It is getting way to cold to be butchering anything! We did the last 12 meaties on Sat...Brrrrr. I still can't hand over $2 a bird to have them done. I already have about a $1.30 per lb into them. That would put my cost through the roof! They sure are tasty!

My chickens aren't minding the cold as much as I am. :|
Our girls (21 assorted pullets) are six months old today. Yesterday, we got our biggest haul of eggs ever - ten! I made a big veggie quiche to celebrate.

Hello Agian,
Our birds don't seem to mind the cold weather or the snow. The little ones were the cutest. They went to get a drink the the water was frozen!!!! They walked all over pecking at it trying to get a drink. So, I finally went over and got the ice out so they could drink. Right now all the babies are cuddled under momma. I am not looking forward to it. I keep hoping to win the lotterey so I can move to a much warmer state!!! They are still laying eggs and that is good.
We couldn't butcher ours. Got too attached to them. But if we have some extra roosters again , our youngest son wants them to butcher for his family.
Looking for some sunshine!!!! Myrna
