The black ones are my favs too!!! Even the Java hens have the green cast to all their back feathers! They are just gorgeous. The funny thing is that the one little White Java that hatched is my fav personality wise. He's just know since the moment he was born that he was hot stuff.

That's the realy reason that Rhandi died her hair pink. I told her to keep thinking girlie thoughts and to wear pink when around my eggs. What a good friend.

I was just a little slow on the uptake and did not figure it out until today!

~yawn~ I'm about ready for bed.

I dug through some stuff in the basement yesterday and came across.... our old homemade incubator!!! I thought that thing was L-O-N-G gone. It 's been a good 8 years since we've used it. Our flock has been keeping itself going until our last broody died this spring.

After a good cleaning and some re-wiring, the incubator is up and running! It was so exciting! I ended up picking up some eggs at the store yesterday to "test" for fertility and hatchibility... I've always wanted to do that, and it makes the 'bator look far less empty.

It's solid wood with a thick plastic top. In the front is a hole just big enough for a hand to fit in to turn the eggs. A thick black plastic flap hangs down in front of the hole on the inside and a wooden "swinging door" hangs down on the outside. A small broiler pan for water fits in the bottom of the box just in front of the two light bulbs and the adjuster knob in the back. The eggs are held above the water pan by a wooden-framed piece of screen.

I even found our old mercury thermometer, which still works! We never had anything to measure humidity, but keeping the pan half-full and misting the eggs once a day gave us 95% and above hatching rate every time.

I don't have any "promising" eggs, but I'm egg-cited none the less!

Hey Sarah! Grab some fertalized eggs from MSU - I had a 75% hatch rate - got the darlins and their moms into Broody Hall this morning and oh what fun! They were squeezing themselves thru the chicken wire that we put down the center of the run - running from one mom to the other! Taken care of that w/wood - just and yes, JUST - 9:28 - finished securing the top of the run, tucked mom/chicks into bed and getting ready to find something to EAT!

Well the darn rooster is back in my basement. He is having issues with turkeys. It was a little funny when Splash, my sons silkie roo, thought he was bothering the hens and gave him a good hard peck on the head. This RIR rooster has one more chance next weekend. If all he does is keep attacking the turkey he will be dinner for sure.

Good Morning all,

Off to the fair. Last day for me. Today we do the awards for the dogs. I'm the Asst. Superintendent for Dogs, so, I must go and give some children their well earned trophies. I have to admit, this is the most fun. The show was a great success, the judges were great. My daughter did very well with her dogs. We will be going to the MSU for the state dog show next month. I think it is the 15th. I love the state show...

Not so well with her pigs though. She did get best in show for her interview about the pigs. So... she sure can talk about them, she just doesn't show them real well. lol. I am very proud of her. Next year will be her last year at the fair, and she is moving into the dorms at MSU on the 26th of Aug. I am going to have an empty nest...(well, except for the 12 chicks I hope to be picking next week in Lansing.) That should keep me busy.

Hope to see you all Saturday, (1 week and counting)

Good morning! Doesn't look like a whole lot of people are on this morning, darn. Everyone always has such a wealth of information that I thought I would try here real quick. Something totally un-chicken-related though.

Does anyone have a really good recipe for blueberry jam? I've made raspberry and cherry so far this year which the cherry didn't turn out so hot. The raspberry was awesome though! Anyway, my neighbor made some blueberry for us the other day which tastes great but is a little thin and looks strange - not the usual dark blue/purple you see. I want to try the pectin and boiling method but I've found several recipes online and they are all different -

Hustonn: Yes, I will be at Chickenstock from 10am to 12pm... then I have to return to Marshall for a dog show, and might come back to the shindig around 2:30pm if anyone is sticking around that late.

Freebie: I absolutely MUST meet you at chickenstock... my sister and I are competing at the state 4H dog show next month as well! Maybe we can meet up somewhere there as well.

Everybody else: Good Saturday Morning!

...I need to get to making those blueberry pancakes!

edited to add bold names to catch your attention! ...and to correct grammar
