My garden and lawn is enjoying the rain! I am glad that I don't have to water for the next few days

Today is Jack's b-day party. I hope it is done raining by 3pm, so I can keep everyone outside.....

The rain stopped just before the party!!! Everyone had fun, and it was short and sweet. now I am dealing with the 2 year old wanting all of his brothers presents.

yesterday we made a discovery of 15 bantam eggs in a hidden spot in the coop. Soooooooo they are now in the bator, seeing what might hatch. Hatch date is August 29. Whatever hatches will be for sale. so let me know if you are interested. there are purebred lavender ameracana and ee eggs.

Have a great evening. Glad for the rain, and glad that the sun is out now!

I'm sure glad it rained, but all day??? I went out a little later than usual to feed everyone this morning as I kept hoping the rain would slow down. Didn't happen. When I came up to the pen with all my heritage stock I found one of my 9 week old Java pullets on her side with her head tipped back. She was wet and very out of it. I place her in my shirt and quickly fed everyone else. We wrapped her in beach towels and quickly dried her off. There are no wounds or obvious problems. We kept her in the house with us curled up in my lap while we watched a movie. She slowly percked up enough to start cleaning herself and fluffing her feathers. I just put her in the brooder for the night and she was eating and drinking, but does not seem strong enough to stand up.

I think that there was some fighting in the pen last night as one of the Dels had her tail feathers pecked. My older Delaware roo usually prefers to stay with the little guys, but I can tell his hormones are starting to kick in. My guess is he was picking on her???? She is so sweet that I sure hope she recovers. Does this even sound possible?

What kind of birds is everyone breeding in Michigan? We have Columbian Cochin Bantams, Snowy Call Ducks, Buff Brahma Bantams, and Seramas that we are attempting to breed true to the partridge color.

We are looking for Standard dark and buff brahma chicks or eggs and Bantam Dark eggs or chicks.

ZephyrcreekI hope your little pullet pulls through.
abbey2140I am not really breeding any chickens yet. I did have a phoenix hen sitting on her hidden nest but when I tried to move her to a safe place she refused to sit on the eggs again. The other girls just started laying 2 weeks ago.
Went to put the chickens to bed tonight and found two dead cornish x's. We were going to butcher the roosters this weekend but since the dead ones were hens we decided that tomorrow we will butcher all of them. I think they had heart attacks or someting like that. Their heads were all blue and purple. We have never lost a chicken before except to coons. So anyway a busy day tomorrow.

The little pullet might just have been in shock. Keep her in a "hospital cage" for a few days. I hope she is ok. I had a Serama get picked on horribly by a mean hen, causing him to fly up and get caught between a straw bale and my fence, upside down. I was horrified and was sure he was dead. He was a mess and I felt like a terrible steward! He ended up being king of my coop, till his robust crowing caused me to rehome him, sadly. Chickens can be pretty tough!

Last night I thought my pullet was really improving. She held her head at a normal angle, and was interested in food and drink. I kept checking on her every hour until we went to bed. This mornig she seems to have gone back done again. She lays at a funny angel with her eyes closed and head back and panting. I have been hand feeding her water with light corn syrup mixed in. She is by herself in the garage, but I am thinking of taking her to the basement as it is supposed to be so hot today.

Any other suggestions?

zephyrcreek: look at the chickens pupils, shine a light into them, and see with they dilate. If the eyes doesn't dilate (or only one eye dilates) she may have brain trauma (caused by a possibly head injury). I had a chicken who had the same physical issues, and we thought she might have fallen off the ramp funny or gotten hurt some how. The vet I work for said if it was just an injury that in time she may get better on her own with lots of rest and relaxation.

After she passed away we did a necropsy and she ended up having a brain tumor that grew very rapidly (she was an older rescue chicken). So it was not a head injury, but it did had the same signs.

I checked her eyes and both dialted properly. She just seems to pant more and more. It is cool where she is at so I don't know if it is stress, or a fever? She does not feel hot to the touch.....poor little girl
