I will pass on fresh turtle!

The shell will be a cool thing though!

Awana was fun tonight! 19 Sparkies (K-2) last year we had 6 and 2 moved up to t & t. Not enough volunteers, but we survived!!!

Need to head to bed, 5am comes really early. Lifting wieghts tomorrow.

Just a reminder.... if you are showing at Fowl Fest registrations need to be mailed by September 28. I have to get ours around and in the mail!

Good Night all!

Sarah

Oooh...Fowl Fest...when is that? Never been but I want to go...

Eating a snapper? wowsers. I've heard they make good soup...and I've also heard from other MI people who eat them that the meat will twitch for a long time after you kill them...weird....

But hey...you got it, might as well go for it miss_jayne!

Can I chime in? Michigander, long-time reader of this thread but never have posted.

My husband says the headless turtle will keep on moving for a long time before it dies completely. Never have butchered one myself, but now I must say I'd like to just to see how it goes.

So... he gave me snapping turtle fishing instructions for the river that runs through our property. According to him, now is a great time for it. Who knew!?!

If you cook it up, let us know how it tastes. I'm curious.

Oh Rhandi that turtle must be old man, and have old man meat

FowlFest it is a poultry show, there will also be some small sales. it's fun. you gotta go, Caleb!!!! i plan on being there! last year i had a blast!

i am so gonna cook it!!!! i cannot wait! i was told to leave it in fresh water a few days. i figure that gives me a few days to feel better and then, WHACK WHACK WHACK!!!!!!

Olive...i so will take lots of pics! i am a pic-o-maniac. it might help someone else try something! and pics of the food too!

MJ put that snapper in a water trough of water for at least a week to let him clean out. They stink and if have eaten dead fish/rodents etc the meat will stink too.

After his clean out...use any tool you have handy to get his head out and nail it to a tree, I use my pines as its such soft wood and its done in a hurry. Chop his head off and stay away , that head will clamp down after being taken off. Let it hang for a day to bleed out then get a saw's all or the like or a good sharp dry wall cutter and cut him from tail to neck. Peel back the shell and carefully take the meat out. rince it well or soak in salt water over night helps to kill the gamey taste.

I put all of it in a crock pot or pressue cooker to get it tender then make soup, broil, cream soup in the crock pot over home made egg noodles. Your choice. You'll love it once cooked propertly.

If you want me to come show you how to butcher, Id be glad to. I do them all the time. LOL after a big storm I go road hunting for them.

To my knowledge there are no laws in Michgan for snapper, they are fair game. Especially found on your own property. Resident killing/huntiing requires no permit.

EDIT: PS wear old clothing as their blood stains like no other and you'll never get it out. Ruined many pair of jeans butcher'n them.

saaa-weet! thanks for all the tips! catray44 sent me a guide on how to butcher one too! i think i am going to do this and i am thrilled!!!!

i have him in that big tub still with water so i will keep him there until he's cleaned out then. i can whomp his head to a tree. we have spruce out back that should work! i want to save the shells for James. i think i will use a super sharp fillet knife to separate them from the skin then peel them off.

totally geeked about the whole thing. i may have to call on you Ooopsy for a back up just in case i get stuck though.

MJ-----I am glad oopsy volunteered to help with Gamera. I was more than willing to assist and learn on chicken butchering, but I think a snapping turtle is out of my novice league

The sick bug hit the UP over the weekend. Both kids had the sneezing, wheezing, sore throat thingy. Both better by Monday. I got hit with it yesterday at work. Not a pretty sight! "Here's your meal (SNEEZE!)" actually kinda funny from my point. This morning I feel miserable! Oh well - it will pass.
