[Daycare Mom]

My 7 month old buff orpington hen went broody on me last week. I thought if I kept on kicking her out for a week or so she would give up...Wrong! Anyway, my roosters are only 3 months old so my hens eggs are not fertile. I got some eggs from a friend and slipped them under her yesterday. I have no experience with this so any advice would be great. I am very worried that if the babies hatch they will be soooo cold!

I would try to provide a separate enclosure for you broodie that is total draft free. It shouldn't need heat, just no drafts. I think I would put her in a small cardboard box with a hole cut in the side for an entrance. You might even use several layers of cardboard to act as insulation. That way the heat generated by the hen will raise the temperature of the box. Once the chicks hatch they will stay very close, or under, the hen. Make sure they have access to food and water that does not require their going outside.

Hi All,
We brought our little silkie and 5 babies in the house for a little while. Friday it is supposed to be nice and I want to introduce her back out with the rest and watch and see how they are doing. She never did hatch out any more, but that is alright. Not bad for her first time. Our cats think we should let them be play toys for them, but no dice there. The little Momma is quite tame and I can move things around in her pen and she doesn't bother me.
The other two silkies we got from Vicki are doing well. They still stay to themselves and I have to still make sure they go inside in the evenings. We have our coop and pen in the back and can watch them from our bedroom window. We used dog fence for some of our fencing also and it works alright. Baby chicks can go through the wire, so we put a few things around the bottom so they can't get out. They are little escape artists, and any little hole they go zipping out. Just had to rescue one of the older babies that got in with the big chickens.
Hope you are all doing great. Those eggs are nice too. Ours are just starting to lay also and we get all shades of brown and green. Not one white one. Myrna

Anybody want to pick up some free birds and take them to HIllsdale Saturday? I have 14 that I really need to get rid of.
I have:
1 blue cockerel bantam cochin, nice bird. 6 months old.
2 black with red and buff on neck, wings and tail, bantam cochin
cockerels, pretty. 4 months old.
1 white bantam cochin roo, not much to look at but the best chick
sitter ever. 3-o7
5 pairs of porcelain Belgian d'Uccles. 3 months old.

The deal is, take all, keep any you want and sell the rest.
I would take them myself but don't have a car I can depend on to make the trip.

I would rather give these birds away rather than to do the alternative. Sooo if ya like spending time at the Hillsdale Flea Market here is your chance to make a couple of bucks while shopping around for that special treasure that can only be found at a flea market. :0)

Hi everyone! I just thought I'd share a few pics of the view out my back door a few days ago. Being originally from Tennessee, I am accustomed to beautiful scenery on a daily basis. But I'll tell ya, these Michigan sunsets are AMAZING! My mom and sister were visiting this past week from Tennessee, and they both got to see these beautiful creations.

I like to think of them as God's paintings...truly magnificent. Hope you enjoy them! Oh yeah...I threw in a pic of a few deer that routinely pass through our property...never get tired of seeing those either!

Speaking of God's artwork, I just read a Stanley Horowitz quotation recently, that "Winter is an etching, Spring is a watercolor, Summer is an oil painting, and autumn is a mosaic of them all". I know that I certainly enjoy every season, but none more than fall.

My question of the day is, what is the best brand of glue to glue the leaves back on the trees?

Those little tubes of Super Glue are really getting to me, plus I keep gluing some of the leaves upside down...

see, the prob with super glue is, it has to be the same two surfaces, so, ChickaD, you can't be putting maple leaves on ash trees!

Gorilla Glue. that stuff fixes ANYTHING...ask my son who has two huge gobs on his glasses! (hope he doesn't get beat up at school!

)


and yes, color side up! or make a collage! glue a whole bunch on a pine tree and make it super duper pretty!
