True, Opa! I've been telling myself for years that I will not hatch...I work full time, and would be worrying sick about temps & humidity while I'm at work. I've got a good friend (who I met here on BYC) that does my hatching for me. Well....LSS, I ended up buying a small bator, and I've got some B/B/S Jersey Giants in there now. Sigh...raising chicks in the winter in my basement is not appealing....but, come summer when they begin to lay, I know I'll be happy!!

Speaking of sleds.... I tried to buy one yesterday...went to the 3 stores in Fowlerville (Walmart included) that would have them and no one had any in stock yet.
Ok they are decked out in Christmas the day after Halloween, but they don't buy the sleds?!?
Our neighbor happened to be at Walmart too looking. Her husband ended up finding sleds at MC Sporting Goods store in Brighton. Overly priced but the kids are happy now!
Rachel had one of her bantam chickens die this morning. It had a crossed beak. And the lowest on the pecking order. I am surprised it has lived this long. This batched hatched end of March. She is taking it very hard. I think hormones are playing a big part. She has been in bed all morning, so I am about to talk to her again and see if we can get some progress in our "to do" list today.

christy17 I am in Gladstone and will be hatching like mad so let me know when you start looking I might be able to hook ya up. Will be hatching designer chicks (mutts) and Buff orps and Blue, Black, Splash orps, some Isa Brown/EE mixes and maybe some Aracuna's (I know I spelt that wrong)
Victor is doing great! I just started hatching some chicks from his hens. They are a few weeks old. I have 6 right now with a few in the bator. Most are lighter like their moms but one is dark like dad. Too early to tell if it is a pullet or cockeral, hoping for pullet!! Would you like me to save you a nice dark pullet? I plan on hatching lots more!!
The Traverse City area is going to get 1-2 feet of new snow between tonight and Friday. I know that's just a dusting to any U.P. folks
, but I think that's awesome. (Too bad my area is only going to get about 3 inches!).

True Satisfaction indeed, and after going through the complete process and butchering, it feels like you own a respect for the animal and a respect for the generations of homesteaders, and natives that fed their family this way.

Hahaha... it is crazy to think theres no sleds about when half the stores are already blasting christmas music and the displays are already flashing with lights and all.
You know, I grew up in the generation where all the sleds were getting fancy, but I remember my grandmother used to have these metal dish types sleds in her garage and those were wicked on hills... me and my cousins loved 'em.
Oh, and hope Rachel is cheer'n up and the to do list is getting shorter, if even only slightly.

Jean --Thanks for the offer -- I'll take you up on it. Whenever the chicks are ready, let me know. Like I said, it doesn't matter what they are. Dreams of fluff balls are running thru my head. The dust bunnies are getting crowded out!
The metal saucers are hard to come by. When I was growing up we would take the horse out, wrap a rope around the horn, and the other end to the saucer. The horse would run down the road then stop rider untie the rope fast and saucer and passenger would go flying past the horse.
Only one horse would let us do this. Lots of fun fairly dangerous as I look back on it!
Rachel is feeling somewhat better. We got a huge item checked off our "to do" list. I was able to coordinate a babysitter, have Jon(hubby) meet us at the post office (he went to the wrong one first) and get our applications in for Rachel and myself. Both parents have to be there for a minor. So we should have them in 2-4 weeks. Plenty of time before we go to Honduras in February.
I am debating weather to start incubating eggs in January or wait til we get back from Honduras. I am leaning towards February since this would be one less thing for Jon to deal with. Some cute little fuzz balls will be so fun in the middle of winter!
