Question? I know where Herbrucks is, but I noticed another "Organic" farm that had their name on it as well...same folks?...or a different family?

Hey Steve,

Last summer Herbrucks decided to expand into the "organic" egg market and so they built that "green meadow's" egg farm 3 miles away from there headquarters. The funny thing is, I don't see any green meadows!

Jones is a great place to get meat. We haven't raised any hogs yet, but wouldn't mind it, but we buy all our bacon and sausage from them and really like it. A good egg needs a good piece of meat to go along with it!

Do you have a grain mill?? I grind all my own grains and have created a great recipe. I usually use hard white berries, but I also like winter red. The white is great for toast and sandwitches, and the red is great with soups and stews. Here's the recipe

1 T yeast (preferably SAF)
1 1/2 C warm water
2 t salt
1/4 C honey
1/4 C oil
1/4 C buttermilk
2 T vital wheat glutin
1 1/2 C white bread flour
3-4 C whole grain wheat flour

Disolve yeast in water. Add next 5 ingredients. With dough hook on mixer add white flour first and then the wheat flour in 1/2 cup incriments until dough no longer clings to side of bowl. Turn out on floured surface and kneed 3-5 minutes to activate the glutin. Place in oiled bowl in warm place and let rise 1 hour. Punch down and seperate into 2 balls. Rolls them out into to rectangle and roll up jelly roll style. Place seam side down in a bread pan. Allow to rise 1 more hour. Bake in pre-heated 375 degree oven for 24 minutes.

I also have a great recipe for cracked wheat bread that is a great hit where ever I go. I also use this recipe as a base for many other things such as cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls are so good that my veternarian takes them towards payment on services! Let me know what you think.

I think it sells eggs to "Egglands Best" eggs and so it needs to use a better feed or something like that. All I know is there is nothing better than a free range, non-X rayed egg! But hey, I am just prejudice! I think good eggs come from happy chickens.

I was going to call them when the peeps hatch and see if a sexer can come over and get rid of the roosters. I don't see the reason in putting feed into a rooster that we are not going to keep. I don't think I trust myself in determining the sex.....besides that, the thought of putting my finger up their hoo haa doesn't thrill me either!!
 
Chicky, they don't put fingers up their hoo-ha! They just press the abdomen to get rid of the poo in the cecum, then they look in there and see if they can see a tiny bump; if so, it's a boy! Wish I could do it!
 
I must have gotten confused looking at the pictures of "how to sex a chicken" It looked like you had to........well, you got the picture. How far away do you live? As you read, I make home made bread and would be willing to trade bread for sexing!
