Evening All - have switched our feed over to pellets because the little darlins were wasting so much - some of their shells have been really really soft and thin - before they were incredibly thick - any suggestions on what we can do besides going back to a self mixture of feed?
Everyone is eating the pellets well and free ranging at will - I do give them sunflower seeds and "candy" from time to time plus scraps and oyster shells and crushed eggs shells - From my limited knowledge, their shells should not be so thin - thanks!

Do you have yours outside with everyone else? I am just worried about the big turkeys and all the roos are staring to get rowdy. I was thinking I would wait a couple more weeks and introduce them in when the other go in to be butchered.

recently, i read that lack of calcium is not the cause of thin shells. stress is. lack of calcium will just cause the ceasing of laying.

it can be the stress of the change of food. any change freaks animals out. give them a little time to get used to it. (a month for any change to life for chickens)

for treats, no more than 10% of the diet should be treats.

sounds like you are doing just fine, just need a little time for adjustment.

Good morning!! DD's duckling hatched this morning!!!
wee.gif
She stayed up til the wee hours to make sure that this one lived -- I told her this was the last patch we were trying this year. He now is resting with his "buddy" -- all fuzzy and cute!! I'd post pictures, but my computer doesn't download anything anymore:)

ps its a magpie/cayuga mix; its black with a white chest and speckles. takes after both I guess.

Good morning! Even hotter today. Yuck!!! And the kids pool is getting really warm so it doesn't even cool you off.

Got my first naughty roo today. He ran at me with his hackles up and I gave him a boot backward. So he came at me again slower so I stood over him and stomped my feet at him till he backed down and I chased him away. He does this to all the other chickens and they all run away. I think I am looking forward to when we can butcher all these roos. The only thing even trying to crow is my little silkie roo. He isn't very good at it yet but he is trying. We are keeping him. We are keeping 1 RIR. What should I start looking for in a good roo. We have young kids so not to aggrisive [sp.] I wanted to keep the big guy but he never leaves the chicken yard when they get to free range. Him, the big turkey, who is really lazy and the silkie girls all stay in.
