Thanks!

I'm working towards a biology degree from Lake Michigan College in benton harbor. I have no idea what to do with it afterwards, and though I love science and all things nature, it's my dream to attend culinary arts school. The community college in grand rapids has a killer program, I hear.

The scholarship is given by 4H for horticulture members.

Soomi, Welcome to BYC, and the Michigan thread.

I'm sure that Chickenstock is going to be a wonderful time. Hopefully you will be able to attend. I'm looking forward to it, I will be able to put faces with the names of people I have come to know here.
One plus is that we will get to meet Sarah. A very talented young lady. I'm sure her parents are very proud of her.

Sarah you tell those people tonight that Opa says you deserve to be awarded with that scholarship.

Sarah -- Best wishes/prayers for you tonight.

Well, I have two eggs to my name right now. And I love baking! Not a good combo! No eggs and to love baking.

I am being wiped out -- I am glad people are buying my eggs. I need more chickens!!!!!!!!! Just got three layers from friends last week. Well, I guess that I will be baking bread today since I don't need eggs for that. My 4 EE pullets should start laying soon -- combs turning red. Come on ladies.....hurry up! Right now I have 14 layers with my EEs laying soon.

okay, this is NORMAL for him then. he is just having his hormones kick in, so he is just as weirded out as anything.

keep on him. when he gets put back, he will be the low man on the pole.

Thanks MJ. The turkeys are all outside in the chicken yard. The pullets are all teaching them not to take their food from them. The only one that backs down from the turkeys is the silkie roo. He is such a wimp. But that is better then full on hormonal attack rooster. The poor sweetgrass that got a whipping this morning was afraid to even leave the coop today. Big scary rooster might be waiting for him.

all normal. they have to 'duke it out'. someone has to be top dog and someone has to be the low man on the pole. as long as there is no major bloodshed, let them get into it.

i am STILL trying to figure the sex out on my Sweetgrasses! aaargh! i am really hoping to have a pair!

here is a totally random post....
i asked my daughter, Elizabeth to make me a salad for lunch while i was cutting more chicken wire.

she called me and let me know it was done. i sat down to eat and the lettuce looked a little 'odd'. i tasted it. i asked her where she got it. turns out she used a head of CABBAGE that a friend brought me for our geese!

so i guess i get a big bowl of coleslaw or whatnot instead!

they are very much like other Heritage type turkeys...18-30 lb range (depending on sex etc) and they are supposed to be tasty.

this will be our first season with them, so i will have to find out later how big mine become. we wont be eating any of them, as they will be breeders (hopefully, if i have a male and female)

we have Bronze, Blue Slate, Bourbon Reds, Midget White & Sweetgrass Turkeys. they are all a bunch of silly little things! they crack us up!

Hi everyone! I've had quite the afternoon, and probably given all the neighbors quite a chuckle. We live on 20 acres of old farm land on a corner that was subdivided a few years ago, so we share our North property line with 6 different houses. Well this afternoon I could hear thunder off in the distance, but it was not raining yet. I decided to make a quick run down to the field to check on everyone and make sure I had not left the grain uncovered where it could get rained on. Aidan came down with me and we started messing around. The next thing I knew the rain hit full force, and it was closer to the hoop house than to our house. The 2 of us ended up sitting on the feed bucket I was carring with 100 meaties and a confused goose watching us for almost an hour. I can just imagine my neighbor sitting at his back window with his telescope laughing his but off. Needless to say we were dripping wet and cold. It rained so hard we could not see for more than 50 feet out of the hoop house. I am greatful that the 7 week old Dixie Rainbow were closer than the 11 week old range birds. I barely make it out of their hoop house at feeding time, I can just imagine what would have happend if we had to hang out for awhile.

I would have been processing a whole bunch of birds!
