Oh thank you! That's what I was really hoping to hear. Not that I don't want one of that breed as a tom though

MJ - getting excited about a new batch of chicks this week! Dixie Rainbows - wooohoo! Silly, I know but they can be so much fun (just don't think about all the work).

you are welcome.

females can exhibit 'male type behavior'. at least MINE do.

it is exciting, isn't it???

the one thing i do like about the Dixie's is that they are much more low maintenance than the CX's. no stink either.

mine are out on the front lawn roaming right now. they are easy, breezy, lemon squeezy.

and pretty too!

Anything that stinks less than a CX is a bonus!!! I could not believe how badly they smelled. The ride to get the 3 we had done processed was a total open window one!!!! What size do the dixie rainbows get? I know they grow at a more normal rate and take longer to get to roaster size, but what is there normal "topping off" weight? The hens we took in were 9-9-10 #'s, the we got the chicks the middle of May.

a 12 week cockerel will weigh approx 8.5lbs and pullet 6.5lbs respectively before butchering. that will all be dependent on the way your methods etc.

you should also retain approx 2/3 of the weight after butchering. same as any other bird.

the cost is way less than a CX to feed. they are excellent foragers. built to roam.

As requested, here are some pics of our bird babies.

These are the last of the Seramas we have. I am missing a pic of their baby which was accidently kept and hatched with baby brahmas. OOPS

Hi everyone. Been pretty busy the last couple of days. Had our local WaterFront Fest this past weekend and we get crazy busy at work. Had today off and went fishing. Showed the boys how it was done - my salmon was 20lbs vs. DS's 14lbs. haha. Also this weekend lost my little banty roo Er. Found him when the dogs were "playing" with him. I don't think they killed him though. So his buddy Nuggs has been kindof depressed since he can't find him. May have to get some more Dutch banties.

MJ - actually got to 90 degrees this weeknd with 100 percent humidity so no i'm not freezing quiet yet. Maybe next weekend though.
