YakLady: My barn that I just turned into a coop has tongue and grooved wood flooring in it. I put down 2 bales of pine shavings per pen which inside are 9' x 10' it makes for wonderful deep litter. I put them in there aprox 6 weeks ago and you still cannot smell chicken. I rake the top every couple days and put into a muck bucket where I dump that into my veggie gardens. The only thing is, you must put a board at the door opening or the pine shavings get pushed out from them scratching. I used a 2" x 10" board on the inside. It works great and I dont have much pine on the hallway floor. I tried sand in my other coop and I didnt like it cuz it packed down so much and felt kind of damp when Id walk on it with bare feet. I ended up putting thick pine shavings in there too.

Hillybilly Hen: If you have a chinese market near you, they sell chicken feet cheap, like $0.50 a pound. Here is the recipe I use for my stock. http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_make_stock_from_chicken_feet/

Afternoon. Took my roosters in yesterday to be butchered by the Amish. Picked them up today. They did a really nice job. Well worth $1.25/bird. So glad they are done! We did one ourselves and then rifle season came about and the hubby has been preoccupied ever since. Imagine that!

Sorry I couldn't answer you sooner. Would you like to see the pics of what I built? It was very inexpensive. Here are the supplies needed.
1 or 2 pieces of ply board
1 sheet of Styrofoam insulation
1 2 by 4
A heat lamp
It is inexpensive and it keeps my birds nice and warm. Ill post pics tomarrow.

I never have saved the feet of chickens when I butcher. If I did I might be tempted to try eating them and they sound like just to much work for the end product. I sorta figured that eating them would probably be in the same category as eating bait in a Japanese restaurant. Did you know that there is a Vietnamese chicken that is breed to have abnormally large shanks and feet?

I wouldnt ever go as far as to eat the feet. Just seeing all those feet in the bowl last night, made me a little on edge. Started to bother me. But the stock from them is DELISH made some dumplings this afternoon with it and they were wonderful.

Im going to can the rest of the gel stock tomorrow and should have enough through the winter.

Hey I'm a fellow 4-Her. Are they all ducks or do u have any chickens? If they are just ducks I will check with my parents to see if I can get them.
Thanks For the Info.

I might have some serama's to part with. I have one other person interested in them too, but drop me an email or pm me and I will give you more details. As to the ducks, the BEI and the white calls are spoken for but I still have the snowys and the grey calls and also the goose.

We lost a beloved member of our family yesterday. Our darling Ms. Millie passed away. She has only been with us for a year and a half and was somewhere between 4-5 years old but we loved her dearly and with all our heart. She is missed greatly. Rest in peace my darling girl, rest in peace.
