Just went to take the adult dogs out, they tip toe'd out the door and right back in. Barn thermometer says 3 degrees and the snow is like walking on egg shells. I started my truck to pull up to the chicken house and it was making a crunching noise too. Everything is frozen solid.

I always get worried when temps are this cold, that people have left their domestic animals out in the elements. In farm county, that's about the norm. So time to take a drive with some canned dog/cat food and straw. Keep your fingers crossed it all turns out for the good.

Our puppy Sophie didn't seem phased by the cold earlier this morning. She was angry that one of the large beef bones outside was frozen to the ground. She tried with all her might to pick it up.

It wasn't budging, eventually she felt barking at it would work. I finally had to walk over to her and convince her it would still be there later.

I've been waiting for someone, anyone, to stop by and volunteer to go out a water my birds. Since know one has stopped and volunteered I guess it falls to me. I need to get it in gear anyway. I've got 10 pounds of venison curing in the refrigerator to use for making jerky. I grind the meat, add the spices and cure, allow it to "cure" overnight, then using a caulk gun like "Jerky Cannon" I extrude it into strips for my two dehydrators. I think my granddaughter is addicted to the stuff and that's what she wanted me to make her for xmas. Since the deer season went a little slow I'm just now getting it made. She also wanted to learn how to knit so I sent her an instructional DVD and the needles and yarn. At least that was there in time.

That bank of clouds over Lake Michigan is where I live -- no sun so far!

don't know why it posted twice

Sam -- my kids LOVE the "shooter" jerky. DH made some over christmas and it was gone while watching the Packer game last weekend. Good stuff! Do you make the chunk "old - fashion" type jerky as well? We do. Brine it for at least a day or two, then put it in the smoker for several hours. Delish!

Gotcha. Been no sun here and steady (light to heavy) snowfall for almost a week now. All lake effect. I don't have to tell you it gets almost depressing after a while.

Alright alright. You got me up off my duff. Took 7 lbs of ground venison out of the freezer. That is all that is left of last years deer so I need to get it used up. Should be ready to mix spices and cure in tonight. I'll dig out the smoker when it warms up a little. Sunshine today but still only 16 degrees out there. Brrrr.

hello everyone!

It is so cold out there. At times like this I wish I lived farther south. I am just glad that I don't live farther north!

Off to put the hollywood on dinner. Have a great evening and keep warm!

She's been trying all day to get that bone off the ground.

None of our other dogs could move it either. It is frozen in place, but I give her credit for trying. Stubborn German Shepherd she is....

It weighs a lot too. I was surprised she could even pick it up in the first place. She prances around the yard with it.
