Hi Michiganders!
My name is Karen and I live in South Lyon.....I think somewhere between Yaklady and Opa. The kids brought home a stray chicken, honestly, a couple years ago and we just fell in love with HENrietta......until she started crowing at all hours of the nite and day. Although I have 2 acres, I still have neighbors that I want to continue to have good relationships with so HENry had to go to a friend's farm out in Carlton where he could make himself known all he wants. So of course we had to fill the void by going to the Imlay City swap and took home a silky girl. Well, she was lonely so we went to another swap and got a beautiful mille fleur d'uccle that was still laying fertile eggs and our silky sat on them and only one hatched. We were all so smitten. Then Shelleyb1969 gave us 2 gorgeous little bantam lavendar ameraucanas that literally jump into our arms for loving. It gets worse......then I got myself a lovely EE for my birthday that follows me around like a dog. Keeps getting worse. I went to visit my dad in NJ and his neighbor was selling showgirls so I had to bring home two more of those. Will it ever end? No. Just went and visited Destiny Mike as some of you may know him out of Brighton and he gave us some barred rock and bantam sebright eggs for the broodys to hatch. I need to either buy some more land or find a chickens anonymous meeting.
I am hoping to go to chickenstock and bring the kids....but under no circumstances is anyone to allow me to bring home any more birds! LOL! We enjoy our birds strictly as "pets with benefits" and the kids are enjoying them immensly. I am glad I have found this site to talk chickens and look forward to a great day with other chicken junkies like myself:)

I did the opposite. I did yard work- hauled brush, dug the entire side fence line and put down hardware cloth to keep the neighbors' dog from digging up under the fence, hauled gravel from the front yard to the back, dug a huge hole and made my own dog waste septic system using a trash can and septic starter- cleaned the yard of all doggie land mines, cleared out the flower beds and fixed the fencing around all of those- came in and realized the house looks like a bomb went off but I cant move. I woke up an hour ago and straightened up and started laundry, but my shoulders are garbage. I think my missing daughters are going to have to pick up the slack inside because the thought of sweeping/ vacuuming/ window washing etc is enough to make my arms fall off. My girls stayed MIA until all the work outside was done. Couldn't ask my son to help- he has the next six weeks off. poor kid. I will call the orthopedic dr this morning and get a cast on his leg.

Have a great day! I havent watched the news and have no idea what the weather will be like today- but I will be trapped inside at work all day, so it won't matter.

Congratulations to your family on passing the hunter safety test!!!!
I agree with Opa and the other poster... I've been shooting a Rem. 1100 20ga auto "youth" model since I was a kid... lets just say I've hunted for 30 years now and this gun has been very reliable. I like the shorter stock because I can bulk up on clothes and they don't interfer with bringing the gun up... not to mention much easier and safer to navigate through the swamp with.

After reading Karen's post I started thinking about Chickenstock, about some of the activies I'm trying to set up for the kids, and it started me to feeling like I was the feller planning on taking a keg of beer to an AA meeting. Well maybe her kids will be unlucky.

The coffee is on and I offer you a cup but I'm afraid you might catch what ever kind of bug decided to bite be. I knew I was coming down with something when I started sneezing alot on Friday. Saturday the coughing started and I didn't get much sleep that night. Yesterday didn't fair much better and most of the plans for projects around the house fell by the wayside. Today, the way I feel, doesn't apear to be shaping up to be very productive either.

Opa this will be the first week that I started out feeling good. I had a bug for 2.5 weeks. Started just like yours but I get those darn broncial(sp) spasms and couldn't stop coughing, and then the sinus infection started. Blah.....

After some strong antibiotics I started to feel better mid to end last week. I sure hope you start feeling better soon and kick this bug in it's butt.

Yesterday turned out to be really nice! (actually the whole weekend was great!) I managed to get the trench dug to run ele to the coop. Got my shed and yard cleaned up and cleaned out part of my flower garden. I got my nesting box made and installed in the coop and tightened up the netting over the outside run. I'm pooped this morning!

This morning one of my young roosters kinda crowed for the first time.

Welcome aboard Karen.
Opa, I think I'll have my coffee here at home, don't need any bugs. I worked on the coop yesterday, then I got abot two hours of sleep from muscle cramps waking me up all night.
We also put the chicks outside for about an hour, since it was so nice. They wore themselves out in a hurry. They slept the rest of the afternoon and evening, then woke-up whenwe got ready for bed. You take care of yourself and get better Opa. Roger

From everything I read they could go either way.

With the 1 1/2 as the roost they must grasp it to stay on then there is constant jostling. With it at the wide width it will allow them to settle down on the feet and actually relax. That will also allow them stay much warmer in winter.

Thanks for the info. We decided to insulate... so my DH wants to keep roosts as are for now. They can be changed if becomes a problem. I appreciate all your suggestions and help
