Hello all, it sure was a good day to clean out the coop. I even let my 6 week olds out to run around a bit. Bad news though..... Elloitt has been a very bad boy today.... First he flogged Kodi [the husky], then he flogged my DH, then he flogged me three different times while I was working around the coop.

Funny thing though, i have noticed that he only tries to come after me when I have my rubber boots on. Never when I have my pink crocs on. He better learn real quick not to do this anymore.

Opa, how is Granny feeling? I do hope everyone is feeling better!

A friend came over asking for help looking for her dog who had run off without his collar.
While out driving around hoping to catch sight of the dog I saw what I thought was a large parrot in the window of someone's house.
It wasn't until the "parrot" sat upright that I realized they had a chicken in their window.

We didn't have time to stop and take a good look but it was definitely a chicken I saw.

Hi all.... I'm new to the chicken fancy and am almost finished with my coop and run. I have 18 egg layers which are 6 weeks old now. Where around here besides tractor supply and farm and home can I get meat chicks. I still have a little room for them too.

I agree it was a great day to finish up everything we started working on yesterday. Today was jeans and a sweatshirt. Yesterday I had earmuffs and a scarf on. But my flowerbeds are all weeded whole yard is picked up and mowed, the arbor got put up, and all the deck furniture it back out and ready for a BBQ or relaxing. I think tomorrow it will be for relaxing.

looks like it was a yard work day for a bunch of us today. I got the compost rotated and the oldest spread on the flower beds. Finished raking. Then IT happened. The phone rang and a friend had a bator full of Nankins and only one hatched so we could have it.. They knew my daughter was looking for a bantam to love. WE'LL BE RIGHT OVER! What a little cutie just a chirping away in her box. It's a beautiful sound.

morning all. I am on vacation this week, so I thought I would stop in and say hello!! I have gone to the dark side... I borrowed an incubator and have my first hatch in. It is due May 8th. I am sure looking forward to seeing everyone in June. I am going to try to catch up on some of this thread now. lol that could take my whole vacation.

I do hope that was the end of the cold weather. I cleared out a section of sumac and grapevines near the pond.... I sure hope I don't have a reaction to the sumac this time, I tried to be careful not to get it on my skin... otherwise it's to the dr and lots of shots for me!!

Does anyone else get upset when they see the old farm barns go? There was a nice one that was in great shape that fell with the wind this weekend. The thing that gets me was that it was fixable...

the footings and bottom posts in the center kicked out and thats all it took. It's very sad.

Everyday we'd drive buy and debate how much longer she would stand... yep, looks like the bottoms kicked out more... and then it happens. I always wanted to get an old barn and convert it into a house.

I was a good girl this weekend. I didn't buy the last few ducklings at TSC... and managed to avoid ordering a few turkeys as well. I was holding out for a response from someone here about some geese that needed rehoming... (even DH thought the ducklings were just too cute)

Good morning everyone! I have been so busy lately, just can't see to keep up. I seem to be so disorganized all of a sudden. My dad said the mind is the first to go and it only gets worse!

Silly chicken, I agree, it always makes me sad to see old barns go down. I simply love them and wish I could have some. There is a barn restoration business here in our area, which is a welcome site! Also, what kind of geese are you looking for? I think I have extra ganders I will be looking for a home for soon. Send me a pm if you are interested.

Anyone going to Imlay City? We are hoping to go, would love to see other BYC'ers there!

Good morning everyone.

all new folks.

We went out to dinner yesterday with friends. We were just finishing up, and I got a phone call. My best friend/neighbors 15 yr old daughter was hysterical on the phone. I could barely understand her. She found her little white silkie Luna dead in the duck pool. I dont know how she got in there. We have a huge area plenty of places for her to run to if she got picked on. There are two waterers in the yard that were full, so she didnt need to drink from the pool. I just don't understand how it happened. I felt so bad for Luna. Drowning would be a horriable way to die. And then poor Autum to have to be the one to find her. There were 8 silkies and we think Luna was the only hen. Its just so sad. We wrapped her in a tshirt and put her in a shoe box. DH buried her under the honeysuckle bush she used to lay under.

I emptied to pool and removed it from the chicken yard. When the ducks swim now they will have to go to a chicken free zone of the yard.

SillyChicken: What type of geese are you looking for? Ive been doing a lot of research on Sebastopol and have come across a lot of other breeds, pretty cheap if not free.

And yes bothers me too seeing old barns just become piles of timber. Neighbor around the corner had a milk house, hay barn and horse barn that were very old. The hay barn was starting to fall in and I offerend my come-alongs, cable and some 6x6's to tie it all back together. He didnt want to bother with it and about a year later, a storm took it down. Folded it up like a cardboard box. Such a shame for a beautiful building to go like that.

I have 4 very old barns here and 28 yrs ago I had to re roof 2 of the largest. Back then cost me $6K to have it done but it was something I couldnt wait to do, as I knew I would lose them if I didnt ...that was a lot of money back then, heck it's a lot now...and both those buildings need it again. I'll eat bologna for a year before Id let them deteriorate and fall down.

MSU was here about 2 wks ago, taking pictures of all the old barns in the area. I talked with her and seems that the Amish had built a great deal of the dowled hay barns in Lapeer County and they are trying to track them all down. She enjoyed my grainery building that we call "Emily's Barn" and where I now house all my show birds. I took her inside and she couldnt believe what great condition it was still in being over 100 yrs old. These barns are my pride and joy and Im very lucky to have them all.

Here are some pictures I finally got off my new camera. Opa made me some awesome next boxes for my layers. These are not only very easy to clean but a breeze to put up. Told him to put them on CL for sale and use the money to pay for his feed. Most of you know how generous he is, he just said "Nahhh I enjoy making things for others".
