Sarah, tell hubby that it's going down to 38 degrees w/in the next couple of days! Do you have them inside the house or the garage?

They are in a stock tank in my husbands old race trailer, which is now a feed trailer and brooder. If it gets that cold I will turn the light on

Good Heart!

Everyone,
I have some silkie & showgirl hatching eggs that I'd be happy to give away. My silkies are white, partridge & buff. I was saving them for someone who backed out. They are all about 5-7 days old. If I don't get a taker, they're QUICHE!

Isn't it funny how they are "just eggs" and then they are "potential chickens"?
PM me if you want them.

Been following along kind of lurking. I don't have much news from my end to add but this sentence shouts something at me.
This girl may have accidentally injured or killed pets before, probably hamsters or gerbils. Her parents may just run out and buy her a new one as soon as possible without correcting the behavior of treating animals like toys.
It is terribly sad, and I feel bad for what you and your daughter are going through sevenchickens.

I wouldn't allow the girl near any small animal if I could control the situation. If she is around any sort of pets, I would be carefully watching her behavior.
She may decide to treat a larger animal, such as a dog, like a toy and get bitten because the dog is defending itself. She would probably go unpunished and have sympathy while the dog is put down to protecting itself from harm.
I've seen a lot of stories where kids have obviously been cruel, intentionally or not, to an animal and the animal is punished for it.

You're right. With fish, she never did anything intentional to kill the fish apparently, too much food or just the life expectancy of a feeder fish who knows?

I used to work at the humane society and have heard some wild excuses but my favorite was "the dog doesn't match the new furniture"! Can you believe it!? I sure do understand there coming a time when you can't take care of an animal, but then do right by it.

I am so completely ##**#*# off. Two guys from the township showed up to tell me the chickens have to go. Have been bawling in the chicken yard with my girls for the last hour. People are such complete #*#%. They have been getting complaints since the addition is going up. Mostly from people who said that they couldnt have them so I shouldnt be able to either. Even the county guy said he was in the military for 4 years so that we could be free Americans. He does not agree with the law just enforces it. The last time I checked this is not a socialist or communist country. THIS FIGHT IS NOT OVER YET!!!!!

What basis are they using to inform you that the chickens have to go? How do they plan to enforce their request? What will happen if you simply ignore them? Weren't you grandfathered in so to speak??

I know I told them. He said I am not covered. I said but I am selling eggs. He says oh strike two. Thats a business and we are not zoned comerically and I have no business license. He said get a lawyer, because the county has a team of them. So how much money would I like to spend only to lose.

So I am getting the list of people who compained about me tomorrow. Then I am getting a petition to save my girls. And I am going to have every neighborhood kid write a letter on their behalf. And have as many folks and children show up to the town meeting as I can. I know that I am going to lose. I am just going down kicking.

They said the first letter will go out next week then I have 30days to comply. We go from there. He said the whole process could take months.

In the meantime DH dismantled what he had started on the coop. I cryed. And cryed. Someone SIL knows has 20acres and wants all the girls. I still have to find homes for the silkie roosters, and the two pekin ducks. I really am unsure I want my chickens to go with these people. I just don't know them. My girls are NOT food.

SIL says they just want them for the eggs. I don't trust that, I have little faith in humanity at the moment.

They said that they had gotten more complaints in the last two weeks (since the addition was going up) than they have ever gotten on anything ever before. So that is why the chickens have to go. Enforcement is thru due process. He said there would be a series of letters. there would be town meetings, and lawyers. I actually never asked him if he was going to come and cage my girls up and take them away. He sqaid the process could take months. I don't know what would happen if I ignore them. I was actually thinking of getting rid of everything in my basement and setting them up down there. But that seems like a medeorcre life at best for a chicken. Can you see me with my chickens in a dog crate going to a privacy fenced yard for grass visits. Thats so sad. I have had them over a year with no complaints. I mentioned that too. They didn't care. I want a lawyer. I should have a fund raiser to get a lawyer to chage this stupid law.
