Yesterday, there was a doe (probably the same one) eating one of my dwarf cherry trees. I let the dog out. The dog ran in circles thinking there was a squirrel she had to chase off. The deer stopped, watched the dog and went back to eating. I grabbed a broom and ran after her. It wasn't until I was about 10 feet from her, brandishing my broom that she finally stopped and trotted--TROTTED--away.

that made me laugh! I ran after a deer with my broom the other day, too! They've been spying on my garden and walking thu a bit. I've had minimal damagage though - so far the egg water sprayed on plants and ammonia soaked rags are doing the trick. (the ammonia was for the skunks digging holes!)

Ok- So I rearrange my Bible study at my house to a playground in town and I find out they are a week behind schedule on fixing the tracks!

I called the train company yesterday and never heard back from anyone. Called again today, since they put up the barriers so we weren't suppose to drive over the tracks, even though they aren't working on it. Got transfered to the engineer working on the project

He filled me in that we get to get to deal with this next week.

I am lucky that the deer don't hang around here. Only problem last year was they ate my pumpkins.

Off to go and move the meat chickens back outside since there is nice weather for a few days (hopefully!)

I left the radishes in the garden because the deer were nibbling on them and it keeps them distracted from the important crops like tomatoes and cucumbers.

Saw the doe nibbling on them last night as I was doing dishes ... the dog was asleep on the lawn with the deer merrily gnawing away. Thinking maybe it's time to add a nice loud puppy to the farm.

So, I managed to wrangle and check the other chicks and 3 out of 5 have a small squishy lump just below their neck on the left side. None seem bothered by it, or even seem notice it. BF says because it is in more than one, there is probably nothing we can do about it. The brahma, EE and one of the silkies all have lumps and they are all from different sellers. The other 2 silkies don't seem to have lumps.
So do chicks get small lumps when they are growing, or is it possibly some kind of disease or tumor?

I was going to post yesterday but I have been so tired, I had no energy! lol My kids have heritage camp in Grand Rapids this week, so we are driving back and forth everyday. It is about an hour and 20 minute drive over, then camp all day, then the drive back. We are exhausted!! Tomorrow is the last day, but we will be sad, because it is so much fun!!

Don't feel silly Ferret, we have all had chicken learning curve experiences.

I had a duck learning curve experience I can share. When I first got the ducklings and was watching them eat I thought they were having seizures because they were jerking their heads back and forth. Then I thought they were choking, so I tried to see if I could see anything stuck down their throats, then I thought the food was too dry, so I made it into mush, when nothing helped I was convinced they were goners. After looking at videos of ducklings eating, I found out all ducks eat like that, I just had never seen ducks eat.

Today I got most of the outside of the new coop painted. Just a little more painting to do and I will be done with that... at least till DH wants me to start painting the sheds

I also found out today what has been causing the double vision problems that I have been having. It has been confirmed that I have something called Myastenia Gravis. It is disease that causes muscle weakness. I guess that explains why it takes me forever to get nothing done.

HBH, I've been experiencing some of the same symptoms but I think maybe mine is a geriatric related phenomena called mucho lazy.

I did start building another coop today based on the a-frame chicken ark design. Rather the forming a true A, I have spread the top to 12" and increased the available roosting space. The finished coop will be 5' high, 5' long, and the bottom will be 5' wide. A run area of 25 sq ft should be more than adequate for the bantams I plan on putting in it.

HBH, glad to know you finally found out what was wrong.

Wylie... I know what you mean. The early spring is the worst when the trillers are out... then the different kinds of frogs take over.. Tree frogs are always right near a window....right now the big ol bull frogs are croaking... at least they're not as loud. We have a 2 acre pond and it gets deafening sometimes.
