I've never been to a chicken swap but would love to go sometime. How do they work and how do you know where to find them? Thanks.

Since you aren't too far from Newaygo you could go check out the one they have the second Saturday of the month at the Family Farm and Home store [parking lot]. I am planning on going next week to hopefully give away some little roosters. Of the five that my broody welsummer hatched out four are cockerals. They are eight weeks old and their mom is still taking care of them.

Thanks, Wylie. She was born on July 6th. Her name is Kaitlyn Johanna. She is very sweet and is such a good baby. I am really trying to enjoy her because she is our 2nd and last! Here is a picture:

I was very excited to get our first eggs ever! This was all started by our 4 year old, who decided that it would be fun to have chickens! Here she is with her very first egg!

Opa, sorry to hear about your vole troubles, hopefully they leave enough for you to eat.

Congrats on the new chicks hatching and the new egg layers. I have an EE that just started to lay a couple weeks ago and she started laying every other day right off the bat and now she has laid every day for the past three days. She is serious about paying her rent.

Thanks Hillbilly Hen! Congrats to you on your wonderful EE! What color are her eggs? I am so anxious to see what my 3 EE's lay. My 4 yo just loves it when we get blue eggs from the farmers market! Hoping for at least green ones...

Good morning. Got all the coops cleaned out yesterday, and finally added poop boards to the big coop. We also added a lot of sand to the low spots. After all that we put a turn around in the driveway. Good thing we rested up at the beach Friday and Saturday. We were in St. Joesph on Lake Michigan. The water was awesome!!!!

I can't even imagine waiting for them to hatch!!! I would LOVE to do it, but I couldn't stand the waiting!! How many eggs do you have in?

There are 46 eggs in the incubator. Only one hatched in the night, a black/Lavender Ameraucana. So we are up to 5 hatched. (3 from my daughter hens and 2 from Opa's hen) 8 eggs are not due to hatch til Tuesday/Wednesday. So not sure what is up with the rest of the eggs that, if fertile, should be hatching. I didnt' candle them, so not sure how many more to expect.

It is hard to wait, but watching them hatch is priceless!

Hi,

I just found out something to take into account for planning next year's Chicken Stock so we don't have a scheduling conflict.

The Michigan Bird and Game Breeders Association is going to hold their Eaton County Fairgrounds swap meet on June 11, 2011. It's usually held from 6am until noon.

This is another opportunity for buying and selling chickens and just about anything with wings and feathers, with lots of people from around the state.

Thanks, I may just do that. Maybe I'll see you there. What time does it start?
